DANBURY — The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut, in partnership with the Danbury Farmers’ Market Community Collaborative (DFMCC), presents the third annual DisH Photography Exhibition, an outdoor, year-round installation on Kennedy Avenue. The theme is “The DisH — Downtown IS Happening.”

Twelve photographs by seven photographers were selected to enhance Kennedy Park and Friday’s Danbury Farmers’ Market.

Juror Cathy Vanaria named “Earth’s Bounty Eggplant” by Karla Bernstein of Newtown as 2013’s Best in Show.

About the work, Ms Vanaria noted: “The strength in this image is its simplicity yet complexity. The limited color palette and minimal shapes define its simplicity. The complexity is created by the movement of line defined by points of focus and areas of blur. These lines drive the viewer’s eyes around the composition. This complexity is then heightened by the surface tension between the smooth skin of the eggplant and the water droplets.”

Bernstein’s “Earth's Bounty Pears” is also included in the exhibition. Additional artists in the exhibition are Paula Antolini of Bethel, with “Kernels of Gold” and “Nature’s Paint Brush”; Dee Harris of Danbury, with “Mango the Butterfly & The Orange” and “Yummy Red Tomatoes”; Thomas Nackid of Bethel, “Fork and a Spoon” and “Ants and Pears”; Cynthia O’Connor of Sherman, “Fresh Veggies” and “Red Peppers”; Gary Stanford of Danbury, “Proud Farmers”; and Dennis Yates of Woodbury, “Fish Market.”

Juror Cathy Vanaria is the co-owner and president of Still River Editions. She is also a professor of photography at Western Connecticut State University, and holds a BFA from Hartford Art School, an MA in Digital Photography from Savannah College of Arts and Design, and an MFA in Visual Arts from The Art Institute of Boston. She received a Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism Fellowship in 2004.

The criteria for judging was based on the DisH theme of healthy living and lifestyle, as well as composition and quality. The purpose of the Outdoor DisH Photography Show, and an ongoing mission of CAWCT, is to engage viewers and passersby and to integrate, in a symbiotic way, art in downtown Danbury.

The unveiling and opening reception is scheduled for Friday, August 16, from 4 to 6 pm, at the site. The photographs will be installed outdoors along Kennedy Park and next to Danbury’s Farmer's Market.

 The market is open every Friday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm; the 2013 season continues until October 25. Kennedy Park is at the corner of Main Street and Kennedy Avenue, opposite the city’s bus terminal.

The exhibit will remain on view for at least a year, according to The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut.
