Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*HAIRCUTS are available at the Senior Center on Monday afternoon, August 17. Call for an appointment.

*BINGO will be on Wednesday, August 19, at 1 pm.

*Depart for Chicopee, Mass., and the HU KE LAU RESTAURANT and Dinner Theater and enjoy an all-you-can eat seafood buffet and a show featuring the Polynesian dancers on Tuesday, August 18. The first stop will be the Christmas Tree Shop. Cost is $93. There are a few seats available.

*THE COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE of Danbury, Inc will become the sponsoring agency for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for Northern Fairfield County. There will be an orientation session about opportunities, rewards, and recognition on Thursday, August 19, at 1 pm at the Senior Center.

 

Upcoming Programs

*BINGO will be on Wednesday, August 26 at 1 pm.

*EDUCATING RITA will be performed by Richard Clark on Thursday, August 27, at 1 pm. This is the classic tale of a Cockney girl who looks for culture and finds herself along the way.

*A CRIME PREVENTION PRESENTATION, sponsored by Triad, will be on Friday, August 28, at 1 pm.

*AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM will be Thursday and Friday, September 17 and 18, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. This is a refresher course and you must attend both days, Cost is $12 for AARP members; nonmembers, $14.

 

Day Trips

*HOLIDAY HILL PICNIC in Cheshire will be Monday, August 24, 9 am to 4 pm. Food galore, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, bingo, mini golf, and heated pools. Free transportation from the center; bus leaves at 8:30 am. The cost is $27. Prepaid tickets payment is due August 10.

*Discover FALL RIVER, Mass., on Wednesday, September 9, with lunch at The Abbey Grill, which is part of the International Institute of Culinary Arts. After lunch enjoy a “unique tour” of the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum, and then on to the Portuguese Bakery, known for its breads. Depart at 7 am; cost is $98.

*Depart at 8:30 am on Saturday, September 19 to the Primorski Russian Restaurant for family-style lunch and fun shopping on BRIGHTON BEACH Avenue “Little Russia” and Coney Island Boardwalk. Cost is $74.

*Enjoy a fall excursion on Tuesday, September 22, on a 17-mile train ride through the Naugatuck Valley of Connecticut. Lunch at San Marino and then complete your trip with a tour and wine tasting at Haight Vineyard. Cost is $68.

 

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s, cost is $729, $100 deposit due upon signup; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise, September 7–12, Nova Scotia Cruise on The Carnival Triumph. More information can be obtained at the center.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 2 pm.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM iris card folding craft class, mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, PM Exercise class, Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of

August 17–21

Monday: BBQ beef on a bun, rosemary roasted potatoes, broccoli cuts, marble cake.

Tuesday: Oven fried chicken quarter, sweet potato fries, chuck wagon blend vegetables, buttermilk biscuit, cranapple juice, apricot halves. 

Wednesday: Beef rice soup with crackers, tuna salad boat on hot dog roll, coleslaw, pickles, chocolate pudding with whipped topping.

Thursday: Hot open turkey sandwich on wheat bread, cranberry sauce, sweet potato cuts, green beans, chocolate chip cookie.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: August 24: Garlic parmesan encrusted cod with lemon and tartar sauce, tossed salad with tomato and French dressing, corn and peas, wheat dinner roll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: August 25: Spinach and chicken soup with crackers, cold cut grinder with ham, bologna and cheese on grinder roll with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, pickle chips, fresh melon wedge.
