Book Sale Bake Sale

Anyone interested in baking for the bake sale at the Labor Day Book Sale may bring their baked goods directly to the sale at Fairfield Hills on the mornings of Saturday, September 1, through Monday, September 3. We need brownies, cookies, rice krispie treats, pies, and anything you’d like to share.

New Videos

The library now has a modest selection of videos available for people with limited vision. In these videos a narrator describes the action. The ratings of these movies range from G to R. The videos are shelved in the Large Print room on the second floor and may be checked out for three weeks.

Book Donations

The final day to donate books for this year’s sale is August 18. The Friends will resume collecting for Labor Day 2002 in early October. Volunteers are needed at Bridgeport Hall on Monday, August 20, from 7 to 9 pm, to set up tables and move boxes. If you are willing to put in a few hours of hard, but very rewarding work, be at Bridgeport Hall on August 20.

Children’s Programs

Summer Reading Program: Just a reminder that the summer reading program ends on August 18. Participants should plan on visiting the library to collect their incentives on or before that date.

Middle School Madness will also end on August 18. All raffle entries must be submitted by that date. The drawing will take place the following day and winners will be notified by phone.

Story Hour Registration: Registration for fall story times begins August 27 and continues through September 5. Four sessions for two year olds and their caregivers will be offered Monday through Thursday from 10 to 10:30 am.

Ages 3 to 5 will meet Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 1 to 1:30 or Thursday morning from 11 to 11:45. Registration forms will be made available at the library on August 27. No phone registrations will be accepted.

Adult Programs

Newtown Police Celebrate 30 Years: The Newtown Police are celebrating 30 years with an art show. The exhibit will be on display from August 13 through the 18.

Last Concert of The Summer: The library’s summer music series will be finishing on Friday, August 17, at 7 pm, with an outdoor concert by River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs. Grab a picnic dinner and some friends and join us under the stars for a great evening of music and fun in the Booth backyard. The concert is free and open to the public.

Evening Book Group: The evening book group will be starting up again on Thursday, September 20, at 7:30 pm. The book to be discussed will be Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. Please call the library at 426-4533 if you have any questions.

Poetry Reading: On Saturday, September 8, at 2 pm, Doris Henderson and Janet Krauss, two local poets, will be giving a poetry reading in the meeting room. The public is invited to attend.

Yoga: Ricky Ayers will once again be offering a yoga class Thursday afternoons beginning September 13. Classes will meet each week from 4:45 to 6:15 pm. Call Ricky directly for more details at 757-4150.
