“By The Sea presents the work of three different writers, but their plays work together to present a rich exploration of modern life and relationships, and this adds up to what I hope will be a very entertaining and exciting evening,” Ms Poile says.

The ensemble cast comprises five actors who play a total of nine roles. They are Leslie Van Etten Broatch, Manuel Cortez Browne, Bob Jergens, Joanne Stanley, and Pam Sweat, all of whom are seasoned performers familiar to Connecticut audiences.

Michael Stanley’s ingenuity will transform the Town Players’ stage into a beach, where all three plays take place. Kevin Hardy will create special lighting for the production. The director is being assisted by Julie Untiedt, and Ruth Anne Baumgartner is producer.

Critics have hailed the plays as “provocative,” “entertaining,” “moving” and “masterful.” Joe Pintauro’s Dawn probes old family wounds and tensions as a woman, her brother, and her sister-in-law

gather to scatter their mother’s ashes on the sea; Wilson’s Day takes a playful look at class identity and some unexpected methods of jury-tampering; and McNally’s Dusk turns what begins as a triangle of sexual attraction among strangers into a moment of spiritual communion. Throughout, the emotional intensity is leavened by humor that is refreshing, surprising, clever, and always effective. Themes and language anticipate an adult audience.

By The Sea, By The Sea, By The Beautiful Sea will open September 1 at The Little Theatre, on Orchard Hill Road (off Route 25) in Newtown. Performances will continue through September 23 on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm. Additionally, one matinee performance will be offered on Sunday, September 17, at 2 pm.

Ticket donation is for all shows, with general admission seating, is $10. For reservations, call 270-9144.
