Garner Inmate Charged With Dual Assault
State police report they learned at about 2:28 pm on August 7 that an assault had occurred involving a Garner Correctional Institution inmate and prison staff members, so they responded to the high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road to investigate the incident.
State police said that interviews and a review of prison surveillance video resulted in criminal charges against inmate Jamal Coley, 33. State police alleged that Coley had assaulted two male correction officers, ages 24 and 47. There were no injuries, state police said.
State police charged Coley with two counts of first-degree assault on a correction officer and also with refusal to submit to fingerprinting. The assault charges are felonies.
Coley was arraigned on those charges on August 8 in Danbury Superior Court. He did not enter pleas to the charges. He is scheduled to return to court on August 14.
Coley is an unsentenced inmate being held in Garner on a pending breach-of-peace charge.
