The Newtown Public Schools offer a choice of healthy meals each school day. Children may buy lunch for $2.60 at each elementary school, $2.85 at Reed Intermediate School and Newtown Middle School, and $3.10 at Newtown High School. Breakfast is available for students  at NMS and NHS for $1.95.

Children who qualify under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines may receive meals free or at a reduced price of $.40 for lunch and $.30 for breakfast.

This program runs from October 1 to September 30, 2014. If assistance is needed this upcoming school year for those who were not on the program last school year, they will need to complete an application. If a child was approved for free or reduced priced meals last year, and assistance is needed again this year, parents must complete a new application. An application will be sent home with students during the first week of school.

Households receiving Special Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP) or Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) for their children will no longer receive a direct certification letter from the Department of Social Services (DDS). Therefore, direct certification will be determined at the school level  based on information sent from DSS to the determination official, Jacki Kulikowski.

Questions regarding SNAP/TFA and direct certification should be sent to Jacki Kulikowski either in writing at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Rd, Sandy Hook CT 06482, or emailed to Kulikowskij@Newtown.k12.ct.us.
