OTTOMAN EMBROIDERIES AND OTHER ORNAMENT WALTERS ART MUSEUM

ak/gs set 8/6 #708333

BALTIMORE, MD. — The Walters has a fine but little-known collection of Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century embroidered textiles from Greece, Asia Minor, Armenia, Algeria and other regions of the former Ottoman Empire. A selection of these works is being shown together with pieces in other media, displaying many of the typical ornamental motifs of Ottoman decorative art in, “Ottoman Embroideries and other Ornament.”

The Ottoman Empire was home to several large ethnic and religious communities. They shared a sophisticated “language” of ornament, which each of the communities modified and adapted to its needs and values. The exhibition, which will be on view through September 9, present a study of artistic interaction, illustrated with high-quality works, most of which have not been exhibited in the past three decades.

The Walters is at 600 North Charles Street. For information, 410-547-9000 or www.thewaltersorg.
