The Homesteads at Newtown is presenting its 3rd Annual Summer Concert Series this summer, with music for every taste. At most of these concerts, patrons will have the opportunity to dance to the beautiful music under the stars in The Homesteadsâ lovely main courtyard (or in the dramatic Panoramic Dining Room in the event of rain).
The 2004 series will continue August 17 with a performance by the captivating, imaginative and unforgettable husband and wife tuba-flute duo Double Play. These musicians offer âclassical yet innovative music with an unexpected twist.â
Flutist Amy Ridings is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and a former member of Quintessence Chamber Ensemble. She has appeared as soloist with New American Chamber Orchestra and Bach Aria Group and was principal flutist of Michiganâs Macomb Symphony. Critics applaud, â[She] plays flute with a sparkling clarity and brilliance rarely heard.â
Patrick Scianella, tubaist, holds a masterâs degree from Eastman School of Music and is a former member of the Genessee and Southwest Brass quintets. Despite a severe visual handicap, he performs on occasion as second tubaist with Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Mr Scianella makes the tuba sing, as critics acclaim, with his âunusually good range and remarkable agility.â
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Double Play, as well as the coupleâs 14th wedding anniversary. Their abiding love for each other and their music is evident from the first moment. Their unforgettable and imaginative approach to music â from Bach to Broadway â is accompanied by humorous and historical anecdotes.
Admission to the Homesteads summer concerts is free; all performances are on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm, rain or shine. Refreshments and seating are provided.Â
The final concert will be by The Jeff McGill Quartet on August 31. This group offers the velvet virtuosity of pianist Jeff McGill with his incomparable ensemble. Dancing will also be encouraged for final concert.
Reservations are requested if possible; call 426-8118. The Homesteads at Newtown is at 166 Mt. Pleasant Road (Route 6) in Newtown, near I-84 Exit 9.
