Mailbox Vandalism

Police said they have charged three local youths with second-degree criminal mischief for allegedly smashing about 20 private mailboxes in Sandy Hook during a vandalism spree overnight on August 12-13.

Charged in the case were Gary Marinelli, 17, of 165 Huntingtown Road; Christopher Sheehan, 16, of 6 Clearview Drive, and an unidentified 15-year-old juvenile, police said. State law prevents police from revealing the identity of people under 16 who are charged with crimes.

Police said the mailbox vandalism occurred in the area of Orange Pippin, Russett, Gelding Hill and Cobblers Mill roads. Police said they had received reports on mailboxes being damaged, resulting in an investigation.

In their investigation, police stopped motorist Marinelli on Route 25 about 1 am August 13. Sheehan and the juvenile were passengers in the vehicle Marinelli was driving, police said.

Second-degree criminal mischief involves property damage between $250 and $1,500.

Marinelli and Sheehan are scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges. The juvenile is scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court.

Warrant Arrest

Police report Zachary Bloom, 19, of 30 Ridge Road turned himself in at the police station on August 11 after learning police had a warrant for his arrest.

Police charged Bloom with second-degree failure to appear in court and sixth-degree larceny.

On the night of June 13, Bloom allegedly took merchandise worth about $8 from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village on Queen Street and concealed it in his clothing, resulting in the sixth-degree larceny charge, according to police.

After processing, police released Bloom on a $250 bond for an August 23 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

 

Taunton Hill DUI

At about 11:30 pm on August 11, police responded to a report that an auto had driven off the road on Taunton Hill Road.

Police said that upon arriving at the accident scene, they found the driver, Randy Rosin, 23, of Danbury, sitting in the vehicle.

Police said they gave Rosin field sobriety tests, which he failed. Police charged Rosin with driving under the influence and making a restricted turn.

After processing, police released Rosin on a $100 bond for an August 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Alcohol/Drugs

Police said at about 11:15 pm on August 11, they received a report of reckless driving in the town center, so they investigated.

Police said they stopped motorist Peter Stewart, 18, of Danbury, who was driving fast through the parking lot of the former Grand Union supermarket on Queen Street. Police said they issued Stewart a written warning stating that he illegally possessed alcohol as a minor.

Police said they charged a passenger in the vehicle, Justin T. Doutney, 20, of 11 Oakview Road, with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said they released Doutney on a $100 bond for an August 16 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Three Vehicles

State police report a three-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, about 1 pm on August 10.

State police said a 1998 Volvo tractor-trailer truck cab driven by Admir Hrustic, 26, of St Louis, Mo., struck a 1998 Buick Regal driven by Michael Reilly, 55, of Danbury, pushing the Buick into a 1998 Toyota Corolla driven by Cheryl Harris, 34, of Middletown. There were no injuries.

 

Padlock

State police said tractor-trailer truck driver Joseph Bauer, 38, of North Catasauqua, Penn., was driving a 1998 Freightliner westbound on Interstate 84 near Exit 10 about 3 am on August 10 when a metal padlock came crashing through the right-side front windshield of the truck and landed on the truck’s dashboard. There were no injuries, state police said.

Off The Road

Motorist Luigi T. DeLucrezia, 28, of Waterbury was driving a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant westbound on Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, in a slow-down lane about 3:40 pm on August 9, when a tractor-trailer truck veered from the center lane to the right lane of the highway, state police said.

DeLucrezia attempted to brake and then veered off the road, striking steel guardrails on the right road shoulder, state police said.

DeLucrezia was not injured.

Trucker

State police said James L. Deeds, 34, of Elverta, Cal., who was driving a 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck cab, was in the right lane of westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10 about 10:20 pm on August 7, when an object collided with his hood and windshield.

Deeds was not injured, state police said.

Toy Burglary

Police report that about 5:30 am on August 14 they learned that the front door of KB Toyworks at 228 South Main Street in Sand Hill Plaza had been broken into and a burglary had taken place.

The burglar stole several video games, police said. Police are investigating the third-degree burglary. 

The August 14 break-in is the latest of several break-ins at the toy store in recent months in which video games were stolen.

Golf Course Vandalism

Police report that they charged two male youths early on the morning of August 14 in connection with turf damage at Newtown Country Club at Elm Drive and Brushy Hill Road.

Police said they charged Gary Corigliano, 21, of 174 Brushy Hill Road with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Police charged Courtney Steele, 19, of 147 Brushy Hill Road with conspiracy to commit criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Police said that at 3:36 am, they received a report that an automobile was traveling on the nine-hole golf course. On their arrival, police found a vehicle, which apparently had become disabled, abandoned on the golf course. Police said they searched the golf course and found Corigliano and Steele, whom they transported to the police station for processing. First-degree criminal mischief involves more than $1,500 of property damage.

An estimated $2,700 of turf damage was done to almost 1,300 square feet of turf by the vehicle, according to police.

Both youths are scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 30 to answer the charges, police said.

 

Sealand Drive

Some time between 8:15 pm August 12 and 9:15 am August 13, someone used glass bottles to break the rear windshield of a vehicle parked at a Sealand Drive address. Police are investigating the case of second-degree criminal mischief.

Warrant Served

Police said they served an arrest warrant on August 13 against Leonard Sadler 34, of Stratford in connection with a past incident. Sadler turned himself in at the police station.

Police charged Sadler with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, criminal impersonation, and interfering with police.

Police released Sadler on a $100 bond for an August 29 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Treadwell Pool

Some time between 9 pm on August 10 and 7:45 am on August 11 someone tore down three sections of chain-link fencing around the Treadwell Park swimming pool, apparently to gain entry to the pool to swim, police said. Damage is estimated at about $500. The case of criminal mischief is under investigation.

 

Moving Violations

Police report they stopped motorist Judy Loehr, 48, of Monroe on Mile Hill Road on August 13 for a motor vehicle check. Police said they charged Loehr with operating an unregistered motor vehicle and misuse of marker plates. Police said Loehr is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 24 to answer the charges.
