Richard Benedict Stiewing, Sr, 81, died August 9 in Newtown. Mr Stiewing was born in Bridgeport, son of Carl and Helen (Riley) Stiewing of Long Hill. He was married to the former Alice Thomas of Waterbury.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mary Ellen and Joseph Treffs, Martha Ann and Raymond Corbett, Monica Elizabeth and Timothy Duhancik, Darcelle OâConnor, Pamela Flores, James Richard and Deborah Stiewing, Richard Benedict and Candice Stiewing, Jr, and Karl Stiewing; stepdaughter Debra Parker; stepson Wayne Shopel and wife, Abby; and a sister, Kathleen Baranowski of Seymour. Fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive him, as well. A sister, Doris Haddad of Trumbull, predeceased Mr Stiewing.
Mr Stiewing was a proud eight-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II.
A memorial mass will be held at St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown on Saturday, August 13, at 11am.
