For 51 Years

Thomas J. Egan, Jr, 74, beloved husband of Catherine (Thomas) Egan of Newtown, died August 4 at Bethel Health Care Center after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born in Stamford on June 19, 1932, a son of Thomas J. and Margaret (Maloney) Egan. He graduated from Stamford High School and received a degree in computer programming from the University of Connecticut. He was employed for 27 years at Pitney Bowes in Stamford and in Newtown before retiring in 1992. He then worked for the Newtown Florist and most recently for X-pect Discount Foods in Danbury.

He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for 51 years. He served in many positions of the order both in Stamford and in the John Gildea Division in Danbury. Mr Egan served as a director of the Connecticut and National AOH boards. He was a veteran of the US Army and was a member of the George Powell American Legion Post in Newtown.

An avid sports fan, Mr Egan recently served as president of the Newtown Men’s Sunday Softball League. In earlier years, he served as a coach for Babe Ruth and Little League. He was a past member of the Fairfield County Association of Approved Baseball Umpires and was a basketball referee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Margaret M. Reynolds and her husband, Thomas, of Rockville Centre, Long Island, N.Y., Juliann Zee and her husband, Dan, of Queshee, Vt., and Veronica Cooper and her husband, Scott, of Plymouth, Mass.; a son, Thomas J. Egan, III, and his wife, Eileen, of New Milford; his loving grandchildren, Carla, Casey, and Callie Egan, and Colleen, Thomas Patrick, Patricia, and Maggie Reynolds; two brothers, John Egan and his wife, Beverly, and Eugene Egan and his wife, Ann, all of Stamford; and a sister, Ann Glendon of Hartford. Mr Egan was predeceased by a daughter, Maureen Elizabeth.

He will be sadly missed by his brother and sister Hibernians and his many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated August 8 in St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown. Interment followed in St John Cemetery, Darien.
