Temporary Buildings Expand High School Space

By Nancy K. Crevier

Five of six sections that will form a four-room classroom building on the north side of Newtown High School were put in place on Friday, August 4. F. Walker Crane Company of New Britain lifted each section, which had been delivered over the course of Wednesday and Thursday, August 2 and 3, into place on the piers set into what was once part of the parking area behind the cafeteria.

A sixth unit ran into delivery problems when a broken axle seized up by Exit 25 on I-84 Thursday morning. Because extra-wide loads are only allowed on Connecticut highways certain days of the week, said buildings and grounds supervisor for Newtown schools Dominick Posca, special permission had to be granted by the state Department of Transportation to bring the section in on Monday, August 7, once the axle was fixed.

The four-year-old units leased from M Space, a supplier of modular buildings out of Essex, were moved by truck from a site in Hamden. Once all of the sections are placed, said Mr Posca, M Space will paint and otherwise prepare the modular building for use by the opening of school on August 29.

In addition to four classrooms, the modular building will contain a workspace for instructors and lavatories.
