Juvenile Arrested

Police report that during a domestic violence incident, a boy under age 16 butted his head into his mother’s forehead, injuring her, after which the juvenile left the scene.

When the boy returned to his home on the morning of August 2, police arrested him charges of third degree assault and breach of peace.

Because the incident constituted a violation of the juvenile’s probation in connection with another criminal matter, a judge ordered that the boy be detained at state’s juvenile detention facility in Bridgeport, police said. State law shields the identities of people under age 16 who are charged with crimes. Such offenders are  classified as “juveniles” in the court system.

Four-Vehicle Accident

Police report that a four-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred near 103 South Main Street about 2:30 pm August 1. Besides the four drivers, there were five passengers involved in the crash.

Although the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene to check on two drivers who reported injuries, no one was transported to the hospital, police said. Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters also were called.

Southbound motorist Tracey McManus, 45, of 28 The Boulevard, who was driving a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer sport-utility vehicle, stopped behind a stopped southbound noncontact vehicle whose driver was waiting to make a left turn into a parking lot, police said.

A southbound 1994 Dodge Intrepid sedan driven by Edwin Loveland, 51, of Monroe then stopped behind the Mercury, police said. A southbound 2003 Subaru Legacy station wagon driven by Eve Buxton, 36, of New Preston, then stopped behind the Dodge, police said.

Southbound motorist Mary Jo Pecora-Runkle, 44, of 23 Maltbie Road, who was driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan, then struck the rear end of the Subaru, police said. That impact caused the Subaru to crash into the rear end of the Dodge. That impact caused the Dodge to smash into the rear end of the Mercury, police said.

Police said Pecora-Runkle was following too closely.

Honda Vs BMW

On August 1, motorist Kenia Figueroa, 31, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1998 BMW sedan northward on South Main Street, slowed for traffic conditions, police said.

Northbound motorist Annie Weiss, 71, of 3 Nunnawauk Road, who was driving a 2004 Honda sedan, then struck the rear end of the BMW, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Weiss a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Warrant Arrest

On August 2, Westport police informed Newtown police that they had in custody a woman for whom Newtown police held an arrest warrant.

Newtown police went to Westport and charged Vanessa Potje, 24, of Bridgeport with failure to appear in court, driving while under suspension, and failure to display a marker plate. Police said the original charges stem from a 2005 motor vehicle incident.

After she posted $1,000 bail, police released Potje for an August 16 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant Served

On the afternoon of August 3, Danbury police advised Newtown police that they had in custody a woman for whom Newtown police held an arrest warrant.

Newtown police went to Danbury and charged Amelia Laurel, 37, of Danbury with failure to appear in court, driving while under suspension, and misuse of marker plates. The original charges stem from a 2002 motor vehicle incident.

Police released Laurel on $1,000 bail for an August 22 court appearance.

Mini-Motorcyclist Charged

Police report that at about 4:50 pm on August 6, they stopped a man who was riding a mini-motorcycle eastward on Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Wendover Road. After investigating, police charged Thomas Beck, 20, of Waterbury with driving a mini-motorcycle on a public road and with driving while under suspension. Police released Beck on $100 bail for an August 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Vandalism Spree

Overnight on July 22-23, someone damaged several residential mailboxes in the Philo Curtis Road area of Sandy Hook, apparently driving over the mailboxes and their posts with a vehicle, police said.

Police are investigating the vandalism and ask anyone with information on the crimes to contact them at 426-5841.

Residential Damage

Sometime after 11:30 pm on July 21, someone using a pellet gun shot at a sliding glass door on the first floor of a Pine Tree Hill Road home, shattering a glass panel in the door, police said. The home is located on Pine Tree Hill Road between its intersections with Meadow Brook Road and Bear Hills Road. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Riverside Road MVA

About 8 pm August 4, motorist Sarah Greenfield, 17, of Parmalee Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Chrysler van eastward near 59 Riverside Road, while negotiating a curve, crossed into the westbound lane and then struck a fencepost, sign, and utility pole, police said.

Greenfield and passenger Jessica DiVanno, 16, of 43 Jo-Mar Drive were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. The accident is under investigation.

Mailbox Explodes

Police report that at about 10:30 pm August 4, someone inserted a firecracker or some type of explosive device into a residential mailbox on Huntingtown Road, after which the mailbox exploded into fragments.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Toyota Vs Toyota

Police report that motorist Tait Chappell, 30, who was driving a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, stopped on southbound Main Street for a noncontact vehicle at about 8:12 am August 7.

Southbound motorist Uma Jhawar, 49, of Brookfield, who was driving a Toyota Corolla sedan, attempted to stop, but skidded into the rear end of the truck, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Jhawar an infraction ticket for traveling too fast for conditions.

Intersection Crash

Police report an accident at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way about 5:14 am August 6.

Motorist Louis Mahmood, 67, of 3 Floral Heights, who was driving a 1996 Cadillac DeVille, was attempting to turn left from Wasserman Way onto Berkshire Road, while motorist Shawn Summers, 29, of Tarrytown, N.Y., was attempting to turn left from Berkshire Road onto Wasserman Way, police said. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

Mahmood reported feeling ill, but no hospital transport was made, police said. Police issued Mahmood an infraction for failure to obey a traffic signal.

Jeep Vs Lexus

About 9:48 am August 7, motorist Eugene Rosen, 63, of 22 Riverside Road, who was driving a 2003 Lexus ES-350 sedan, was attempting to make a right turn into his driveway at that address, when he was struck from behind by motorist Timothy Hoeffel, 22, of 12 Old Green Road, who was driving a 1998 Jeep Wrangler, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported Rosen to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Police issued Hoeffel an infraction for following too closely.

Residential Burglary

Sometime between 7 and 10:30 am on August 2, someone threw a rock through a rear kitchen window at a Mountain View Drive home and then entered the building, police said. The intruder stole an Apple iPod music player and three bottles of prescription medication, police said.

The crime constitutes burglary, larceny, and criminal mischief. Police, who are investigating, ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 426-5841.

South Main Crash

Police report that motorist Michael Horvath, 36, of Shelton, who was driving a 2001 Ford van near 71 South Main Street about 12:36 pm August 2, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Steven Perrone, 44, of Botsford Hill Road, who was driving a 1993 Chevrolet van.

Police said Perrone received a written warning for following too closely. Police said they issued Horvath an infraction for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Sandy Hook Accident

Police said an accident occurred at the intersection of Riverside Road and Narragansett Trail at about 4:55 pm August 7.

The collision involved motorist Karen Dryer, 36, of 2 Moccasin Trail, who was driving a 1998 Saab sedan, and motorist John Benvenuti, 42, of 18-B Philo Curtis Road, who was driving a 2002 Ford van, police said.

Police said ambulance volunteers went to the scene to treat Dryer, who refused transport to a hospital. Police issued Dryer a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Tunnel Road

About 2:40 pm August 7, motorist Richard Pagano, 45, of 113-B Huntingtown Road was driving a 1987 Dodge Ram pickup truck near 3 Tunnel Road, when the vehicle’s brakes failed, police said.

Pagano steered the truck to climb an embankment in an attempt to slow the vehicle, but the truck struck a tree, police said. Pagano was not injured. Police issued him a misdemeanor summons on charges of driving without automotive insurance and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
