Darrell Stearns

Darrell Henry Stearns, 89, father of Nancy Dexter of Newtown, died January 31

at his home at Ver Delle Village of St Albans, Vt.

Mr Stearns was the husband of Gladys Mae (Preston) Stearns, who predeceased

him in 1996.

He was born in Highgate Falls, Vt., a son of the late Clarence and Anna (Bard)

Stearns. He was a farmer in Vermont for many years before working for Wesley

Elwood Well and Tile Co.

Besides his daughter Nancy, he is survived by two sons, Darrell Henry of

Scottsdale, Ariz, and Robert Clarence of Danbury; two other daughters, Donna

Dixon of Mars Hill, Maine, and Wendy Kosier of New Milford; and several

grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by

two daughters, Theresa (Ardell) Taylor and Louella Skvorz.

Frances E. Iles

Frances Evelyn Iles, 76, of Seymour, formerly of Newtown, died February 2 at

her home.

Mrs Iles was the widow of Charles Edward Iles.

She was born in Ansonia on September 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Francis

Sheehan and the late Erma Sheehan Bradshaw Thompson. She lived in Seymour for

more than two years, and was previously a Newtown resident for 30 years. She

was a retired cashier for the former Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown.

Survivors include three daughters, Suzanne Korman of Boca Raton, Fla., Karen

Hammond of Peachtree City, Ga., and Judie Ferris of Woodbury; two brothers,

Myron Bradshaw of Seymour and Arthur Bradshaw of Monroe; three sisters, Joyce

Urick and Barbara Walinski, both of Seymour; six grandchildren, four

great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in memory of Mrs Frances Iles may be made to St Paul's Episcopal

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 7, at 1 pm, at St Paul's

Episcopal Church.

Robert Ward Jr

Robert Thomas Ward Jr, 50, of New Milford, father of Robert Ward III and Scott

Ward, both of Newtown, died February 4 at New Milford Hospital.

Mr Ward was the husband of Donna (Schrader) Ward.

He was born in New Milford on September 11, 1947, a son of Robert T. Ward of

New Milford and the late Marion (Carolson) Ward.

He was a graduate of New Milford High School. A veteran, he served in the US

Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked in the maintenance department of Nestle

Co. in New Milford for about 29 years.

He was a member of Andrew B. Mygatt Post 1672 Veterans of Foreign Wars in New

Milford.

Mr Ward also is survived by a daughter, Patrician Geddes of Woodbury; a

brother, Richard Ward of Hollywood, Fla.; a sister, Judy Harvey of Washington,

Conn.; and two grandsons.

Contributions in memory of Mr Ward may be made to the Oncology Unit, New

Milford Hospital, 21 Elm Street, New Milford 06776.

Calling hours are Friday, February 6, from 7 to 9 pm at the Lillis Funeral

Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford.

Services are Saturday, February 7, at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will

be in St Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

Edna M. Pineau

Edna M. Brennan Pineau, 77, of Monroe, died Wednesday, February 4, in Maefair

Health Care.

Mrs Pineau was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the St Jude

Seniors and a volunteer for the American Heart Association. Mrs Pineau had

worked for the Canteen Corporation in Shelton for 19 years.

Survivors include her husband of 15 years, John Raymond Pineau of Monroe; a

daughter, Barbara LeMoine of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Donald Jackson of

Trumbull and Robert Jackson of California; two stepdaughters, Linda Kabelis of

Old Lyme and Marjorie Horvath of Newtown; two stepsons, John Pineau of

Fairfield and Robert Pineau of Oxford; two sisters, Ruth Todd of Bridgeport

and Veronica Todd of Bethel; a brother, Vincent Brennan of Trumbull; nine

grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and seven

great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her

first husband, Oscar E. Jackson, a daughter Nancy C. Murray, and five

brothers.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 9:30 am in the Lesko-Miner

Funeral Home, 155 Main Street (Route 25), Monroe and 10 am in St Jude Church,

Monroe. Interment in Lawncroft Burial Park, Fairfield. Friends may greet the

family one hour prior to service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Church, 707

Monroe Turnpike, Monroe 06468.

Harold Ingerman

Harold Ingerman, 65, of Bridgeport, father of Jeffrey Ingerman of Newtown,

died Tuesday, February 3, in Boynton Beach, Florida.

He was the husband of Adele Feinstein Ingerman of Bridgeport.

Mr Ingerman was born in New Haven, son of the late Samuel and Rose (Rappaport)

Ingerman, and was the owner of Zemel's TV & Appliance for the past 29 years.

He was a member of Loyalty Lodge No 58, I.O.O.F.

Mr Ingerman also is survived by his daughter-in-law, Judith Ingerman of

Newtown, by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Martha-Correi Ingerman of

Wilton; son, Ronald Ingerman of Stratford; and a daughter, Cheryl Ingerman of

Freehold, N.J. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Sarah and Marc

Ingerman, Zackary Ingerman and Justin Kaabe.

Services will take place Friday, February 6, at 1 pm from the Abraham L. Green

and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, with interment following at

Loyalty Cemetery on Burroughs Road in Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be

made to the American Diabetes Association.

Leon A. Donniani

A funeral service was held on Monday, February 2, at Carpino Funeral Home in

Southbury for Leon A. (Lee) Donniani, who died January 27 at University

Medical Center in Las Vegas. Burial will be private.

Mr Donniani attended Newtown schools and had lived in Danbury before moving to

Nevada in 1995. He was a construction worker and an avid mountain biker.

He is survived by his mother, Rosemary (Box) Randall Donniani Atherton of New

Hampshire; a daughter, Brittany Morrell of Hillsboro, N.H.; three brothers and

six sisters.

Patrick A. Trocola

Patrick A. Trocola, 53, of 175 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook, died February 2 in

New York.

He was the son of Alfonso Trocola and the late Dorothy Elwell Trocola. He also

is survived by a brother, Bryant F. Trocola, and an uncle, Amanda N. Trocola.

Funeral services will be private. Cremation will take place at the convenience

of the family.

Contributions in memory of Mr Trocola may be made to the charity of one's

choice.

The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury handled the funeral arrangements.

Elizabeth Nevins

A memorial service was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown on Tuesday,

January 27, for Elizabeth T. Nevins, 82, who died January 25 at Medi-plex of

Danbury.

Mrs Nevins was born in Pawling, N.Y., August 9, 1915, a daughter of the late

William and Mae Neade Taber, and had been a resident of Brookfield for most of

her life. She was the widow of Robert F. Nevins.

She was a former member of St Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookfield and had

belonged to the church choir, the former Jenny Lee Choral Society, and the

Brookfield Garden Club during prior years.

Mrs Nevins is survived by two daughters, Suzanne N. Ely, of Seymour, and

Patricia A. Cook, of Woodbury; a son, Robert F. Nevins, of Omak, Washington; a

sister, Anna Louise Beach, of Springfield Mass.; 7 grandchildren, and 5

great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a son, William Taber Nevins, and

a brother, William Frost Taber.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Regional Hospice of

Western Connecticut, 30 West Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury, was in charge of

Beatrice Colleary

Beatrice Niblock Colleary, mother of Patricia McCarthy of Newtown, died

Janaury 21 in St Vincent's Medical Center. She was the wife of Owen Colleary

of Trumbull.

Mrs Colleary was born in County Derry, North Ireland, and was a New Rochelle,

N.Y., resident for 60 years before moving to Trumbull a year ago.

She was a retired baby nurse for the New Rochelle Hospital and a member of the

Catholic Womens Club of New Rochelle.

Mrs Colleary also is survived by three sons, Michael Colleary, of Hong Kong,

James Colleary, of Largemount, N.Y. and Brian Colleary, of Pittsburg, Penn.;

another daughter, Eileen Canavan, of Trumbull; two brothers in Ireland; five

sisters; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and

nephews.

Funeral services were held January 24 in the Lloyd Maxey and Sons Funeral

Home, 15 Shea Place, New Rochelle, N.Y. and in Blessed Sacrament Church, New

Rochelle. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.

N.Y.

Anna Guggenheim

Anna W. Guggenheim, 92, sister of Mildred Plumb of Newtown, died January 16 in

Bridgeport Hospital.

Born in Sweden, Mrs Guggenheim was a Fairfield area resident for most of her

life. She was the wife of the late Albert Guggenheim.

She was a longtime member of the First Church Congregational, Fairfield.

Besides her sister Mildred, she is survived by a daughter, Ruth Marshall, of

Milford; a granddaughter, Jeraldine Brown, of Milford, a great-granddaughter,

Tricia Brown of Milford; another sister, Tora Nelson of Monroe; and several

nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Robert Guggenheim, her brother, Harry Forstrom

and her grandson, Jeffrey Marshall.

A memorial service was held January 24 in the First Church Congregational,

Fairfield with the Rev David Spollett officiating. Interment will be private

at the convenience of the family.

Mabel D. Beebe

Claire Mabel Flood Delfraisse Beebe, 102, of 16 Hillside Court, Brookfield,

formerly of Newtown, died Sunday, February 1, at Mediplex in Danbury. She was

the wife of the late Robert J. Beebe, Sr.

Mrs Beebe was born January 1, 1896, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of the

late William T. Flood and Ella S. (McKenna) Flood Delfraisse. She was a

graduate of All Saints Academy in New York City and the Academy of Fine Arts

in Chicago.

For many years she operated a custom drapery and slipcover business from her

home in Newtown. She was a communicant of St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown,

and St Joseph's Church in Brookfield Center.

Mrs Beebe is survived by two sons, William A. Beebe, Sr of Brookfield, with

whom she made her home, and Robert J. Beebe, Jr of Audubon, Pa.; two

daughters, Suzanne J. Ford of Suffern, N.Y. and Margot J. Foglietta of Venice,

Fla.; 16 grandchildren (including Karin A. Irwin of Roxbury, William A. Beebe,

Jr and Robert J. Beebe III of New Milford, and L. Suzanne Beebe of

Brookfield); 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 5 at St Joseph's Church,

Brookfield Center. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of

flowers, contributions may be made to St Joseph's Church, PO Box 5072,

Brookfield, CT 06804.

Gordon R. Hawley

Gordon Rice Hawley died on January 29, in Reston, Va. He was born on December

10, 1915, in Danbury and worked in personnel accounting and management for the

General Electric Company for 35 years, retiring in August 1996.

He was a graduate of both the Booth and Bayliss Commercial School and GE's

Financial Management Program.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 39 years, Louise Maye Hawley of

Newtown, Conn., and by his second wife of 12 years, Gwendolyn Chorak Nelson of

Amherst, Mass. He is survived by two children, David Hawley of Centreville,

Va. and Marie Luft of Glendale, Calif.; a sister, Carole Birdsall of

Naugatuck; three grandsons, David Hawley of Centreville, Va., Thomas Hawley of

Boise, Idaho, and Glenn Luft of Davis, Calif.; two stepdaughters Miscelle

Allison of Colo., and Melanie Chorak of Mass.; three step grandchildren; and

several nieces and nephews.

Mr Hawley was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Stratford, and until a year ago

was a member of the Naugatuck Congregational Church while residing with his

sister, Carole Birdsall. He served on the Milford Board of Finance for several

years.

Mr Hawley will be interred with his first wife in St Rose Cemetery, Sandy

Hook, on February 21 at 1 pm. Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Strett, Newtown, is

in charge of the arrangements. There will be no calling hours.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions in memory of Mr

Hawley may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N Michigan Avenue,

Josephine Cuomo

Josephine Consilvio Cuomo, 77, of 19 Cannon Drive, Newtown, died January 31 at

Wilton Meadows after an extended illness. She was the wife of the late

Nicholas A. Cuomo.

Mrs Cuomo was born December 16, 1920, in Capabasso, Italy, a daughter of the

late Giovanni and Esterina DiTomasso Consilvio.

A 60-year resident of Yonkers, N.Y., Mrs Cuomo recently moved to Newtwon to

make her home with her son, Dr Anthony Cuomo. Mrs Cuomo was a former teacher's

aide with the Yonkers Public School System.

Besides her son in Newtown, survivors include another son, John Cuomo of Pt

Jervis, N.Y., and four grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be conducted in St Joseph's Cemetery,

Yonkers, at the convenience of the family.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 21,

at St Rose Church, Newtown, at a time to be announced.

Contributions in Mrs Cuomo's memory may be made to the Danbury Hospital

J. Frederick Seman Jr

J. Frederick Seman Jr, 59, died Friday, January 30 in his home, 10 Timber

Lane, Newtown.

He was the husband of Susan Wiard Seman.

Born in Danbury, July 26, 1938, he was a son of J. Frederick and Anne Borsos

Seaman of Ellenton, Fla.

Mr Seman was employed as a service technician for Home Oil Company. For 20

years he had been employed in a similar position for B.J. Dolan Company of

Bethel and, before that, by Holcomb Oil Company in Newtown.

Mr Seman was shop steward for Local 777 Pipefitters Union. He also was former

fire chief and an honorary member of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department

and a former member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club.

He was a veteran, serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, J. Frederick Seman III

of Newtown; a daughter, Lisa Seman of Southbury; a brother, Richard Seman of

Southbury; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut; 30 West

St, Danbury CT 06810, or to the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department,

Hawleyville, CT 06440.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated February 2 at St Rose Church. Burial

Dorothy E. Penovi

Dorothy E. Penovi, 83, a longtime resident of Sandy Hook, died January 30 at

Mediplex of Danbury.

Mrs Penovi, of 56 Waterview Drive, Sandy Hook, was the wife of Alfred Penovi.

She was born in Braintree, Mass., April 15, 1914, a daughter of Ralph and

Mabel Newcomb.

Mrs Penovi had lived in Sandy Hook for 60 years. Before her marriage, she was

employed as a dressmaker.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Wendy Craig of Sandy Hook;

two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Services were held February 2 at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street,

Newtown. Burial will take place in the Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring.

Ruth C. Ingham

Ruth C. Ingham, 73, a retired secretary, died January 30 at her home at 55

Sugar Lane, Newtown.

She was the wife of Clifford S. Ingham.

Mrs Ingham was born in Danbury on June 15, 1924, a daughter of Robert and Lena

Smith Pleasants.

She graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport and from the Katharine

Gibbs School in New York City.

Mrs Ingham began her secretarial career at the Bridgeport radiology practice

of Dr Isaac Horowitz, where she earned an x-ray technologist license.

She later moved to Newtown, where she worked as a secretary for the Newtown

Police Department and in the Newtown first selectman's office during the

1970s. She also worked as a checker at election polls and referendums.

She was a founding member and former secretary of the Spay and Neuter

Association of Newtown, and was a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America

and the Friends of Counted Embroidery.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Clifford R. Ingham of Newtown,

and a granddaughter.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Parkinson Disease

Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10345.

Cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Crematory, Bridgeport. The Honan

Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Proterra

Marjorie A. Proterra, 84, a former Newtown resident, died January 31 at the

Good Shepherd Nursing Center in Jaffrey, N.H., where she had lived for the

past two years.

A resident of Newtown for 30 years before moving to New Hampshire, Mrs

Proterra formerly lived at Sawmill Ridge Road. She was the wife of the late

Joseph Proterra.

She was born in Somerset, Mass., on March 23, 1913, a daughter of Thomas and

Anne Cronin Eagan.

Mrs Proterra graduated from the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing with a

registered nurse degree.

Her survivors include two sons, Rev Michael Proterra S.J. of Omaha, Neb., and

John Proterra of Winchester, Mass.; a daughter Mary Ann Grant of Greenfield,

N.H.; and four grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Good Shepherd Nursing Center,

Activities Department, 20 Plantation Drive, Jaffrey, N.H. 03452 or to the

charity of one's choice.

Services were held February 4 with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Rose

Church. Mrs Proterra's son, the Rev Michael Proterra S.J., celebrated the

Mass. Burial will take place in St Rose Cemetery.

Brian E. Rockwell

Brian E. Rockwell, 49, brother of Sidney Rockwell Jr of Newtown, died January

28 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford after a long battle with cancer. He was

the husband of Theresa (Donnelly) Rockwell of Cheshire.

Mr Rockwell was born in Albany, N.Y., December 21, 1948, son of Virginia

(Fagan) Rockwell of Fairfield and the late Sidney Rockwell. He graduated from

Central Connecticut State University with a degree in education in 1970.

He taught technical math and English as a second language as a Peace Corps

volunteer in Jamaica, West Indies and South Korea. Upon his return to the

United States, he worked as a social worker/case worker for Infoline in

Hartford and later full time in metals manufacturing/sculpture operation for

Bovano Industries of Cheshire. He also worked for Risdon Corp in Naugatuck and

for the past nine years with Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Wallingford.

Mr Rockwell also is survived by two daughters, Tamarin Lisa Rockwell of

Hellertown, Pa., and Megan S. Rockwell of Cheshire; and another brother, John

J. Rockwell of Fairfield.

Memorial services were held February 1 at the First Congregational Church of

Cheshire, on the Green. Cremation followed.

Miriam R. Nicholas

Former Newtown resident Miriam R. Nicholas, 70, of McKinney, Texas, died

January 25 at Prospect Park Health & Rehab Center in Prospect Park, Penna.,

while visiting her daughter's family in Secane, Penna.

She was born on May 31, 1927, in Hamden, Conn., a daughter of the late Edward

and Miriam Close Redd.

She was an accomplished figure skater in her youth. She received training at

the Greenwich Hospital Nursing School in Greenwich, Conn., and attended Larson

and Quinnipiac College.

After raising her family in Woodbridge, she moved to Nunnawaug Meadows in

Newtown. She was a volunteer at the Children's Adventure Center in Sandy Hook,

at the VARCA group home in Ansonia, and for the Special Olympics.

"The highlight of her life was when she taught a man in his 40's to read,"

said her daughter, Joanne N. Stowe. "And she loved working with the children

at the day care center. She had a special way with children and persons with

special needs."

After leaving Newtown, Mrs Nicholas moved to Missouri, then to Texas, to live

near her son, Scott Nicholas, of Allen, Texas.

In addition to her son and her daughter, Mrs Nicholas is survived by five

grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 31, at 4 pm at Blue Church

Cressy Chapel, Baltimore Pike, Springfield, Penna.

Mary E. Peck

Mary Elizabeth Peck, 79, died January 28, at her home on Bonnie Brae Drive in

Newtown.

A member of the Newtown Senior Center, Mrs Peck was one of Nita's Ladies, a

group which has made more than 110 quilts for HIV/AIDS babies.

Mrs Peck was born in Bridgeport, a daughter of the late James F. and Lillian

(Lawrence) Kyle. She was the wife of the late Russell E. Peck, Sr.

She attended Bridgeport schools before moving to Cranston R.I., where she

resided for 50 years. She worked at Spencer Jewelry in Cranston, and was a

member of the People Baptist Church in Cranston and a former Sunday school

teacher.

Mary Peck is survived by three daughters, Joan Csandi of Newtown, Mary Jane

McFetters of Riverside R.I., and Carol Gallagher of Cranston, R.I.; one son,

Russell Peck Jr, of Okemos, Mich.; two brothers; one sister; 11 grandchildren;

and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Tenk.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, at Woodlawn Funeral Home,

600 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, R.I. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park,

Johnston, R.I.

Barbara Howard

Former Newtown resident Barbara Mitchell Howard, 77, died January 9 at Cape

Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass..

She was the wife of John G. Howard, Jr., of Barnstable, Mass., and the

daughter of the late Sara Beers Mitchell of Newtown.

Born in Meridan, Conn., Mrs Howard grew up in Newtown, where she graduated

from high school. She attended the Lesley School in Cambridge and earned a

teaching degree from Hyannis State Teachers College.

Mrs Howard moved to Barnstable upon her marriage in 1943. She worked with her

husband in his Barnstable boat yard and volunteered at the Sturgis Library,

the Brewster Museum of Natural History, and the Barnstable Yacht Club, of

which she was a member.

Besides her husband of 54 years, she is survived by two nieces and two

nephews.

Funeral services were held at St Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. Burial

was private.
