Glorydays - May 31, 1996
This week in 1991
The Newtown High boys' lacrosse team got three goals from Jason Hirou, two
from Ben Brower, and a sixth from Eric Lipusz, but was defeated 9-6 by
Fairfield in the " B " Division State Championship game played at Bruce Jenner
Stadium. Eric Lausten made 16 saves in goal. During the halftime break
Newtown's Hirou, Lipusz, Phil Smith, and Will Parker were named to the
Connecticut High School Lacrosse Association's B Division All-State team.
Newtown was coached that season by John Walsh.
This week in 1986
Ten-year-old Ross Schieffer got loose on a breakaway and scored the only goal
of the game as he led the Newtown Bandits to a 1-0 semifinal game victory over
Shelton in the Fourth Annual Newtown Memorial Day Kickoff Soccer Tournament.
Schieffer, Steve Nelson, and Ralph Savarese then tallied goals in a 3-0
championship game victory over Bethel as the Bandits became the only local
team, that year, to win a title. Newtown goal Jim Winschel recorded the two
shutout victories in goal while Ernie Badillo, Jesse Meyer, and Jeff
Swiatowitz all turned in stellar efforts as well. The Bandits were coached by
Bob Switz.
This week in 1981
The number combination " 10-9 " certainly wasn't the lottery winner for the
Newtown High girls' softball team who lost the Western Connecticut Conference
championship game and then its first-round CIAC state tournament game, both by
that score. In the WCC final, Newtown fell to Immaculate in the eleventh
inning on a squeeze bunt. Freshman Kim DeCarlo was the losing pitcher and also
led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Dawn Parrott ripped a
three run triple and Dori Cofer a two-run single to spark the offense as well.
Newtown fell 10-9 to Bunnell three days later. DeCarlo finished her freshman
season with a 12-7 record and was named to the All-WCC team along with
teammates Laura Gollinghorst and Sue Roman.
This week in 1976
Newtown High School track and field records were dropping like flies as the
Lady Indians competed at the CIAC Class M Sectional Championships. Wendy
Dickerson won sectional championships in the both 100 and 220 yard dash
events, setting a new school record with her 11.3 in the 100. Pam Dickerson
also captured a sectional crown as she won the 80-yard hurdles ahead of
teammate Tracy Kreizinger, who finished second. Cheryl Hensel set an NHS
record in the half mile with a time of 2:33.2 which placed her second in the
race. Doretta Kearns earned third place in the two-miles and also set a school
record with a 12:34. Newtown's Jeralyn Taubert also garnered a state sectional
title by winning the discus event and taking third in the javelin. With their
fine efforts the girls were six of eleven NHS athletes who qualified for the
Class M State Championships.

Behind the efforts of Delly Ozanne, Barb Messinger, freshman Betsy Freeman,
Carol Butler, Karen Gehle, Sue Marsh, Elyse Hoffman, Sue Hileman, and Diana
Whitehead, the Newtown High School girls' tennis team wrapped up its season
with an overall record of 4-3.
This week in 1966
Matt McQuail slugged his league-leading fifth home run of the season and
George Matern struck out 14 men as the Platt Lumber Dodgers beat the Sandy
Hook Drug Cardinals 4-3 in a thrilling Newtown Little League matchup. In other
action around the league, Yip Randall smacked a home run and Scott Whitehead
and Don Lewis combined on the mound to lead the Cards 15-1 over the Lionel
Sirois Giants. Doug Titus singled and then stole second, third, and home to
lead the Trade Well Yankees to a 2-1 win over the Giants.
This week in 1961
Bill Tuttle banged a home run and Joe Tani and Sid Watkins each added
extra-base hits, but the SAC Midgets fell 11-7 at the hands of the Hoffman
Fuel team from Danbury. Hal Lockwood was 2-for-2 at the plate in a losing
cause while Art Crouch added a pair of base hits as well. Unfortunately for
the Sandy Hook lads, several boys had been left home with bad report cards.
This week in 1956
Chuck Botsford gave an outstanding pitching performance, but nine Newtown
errors cost the team a 5-4 loss at the hands of Ansonia in Pomperaug Baseball
League action. Botsford also led the team at the plate with two hits including
a triple. Other members of the Newtown Baseball Club included catcher Tom
Kearns, third basemen Al Peterson and Elzie Hunnicut, pitchers Charlie Check
and Botsford, outfielders Jack Watkins, Ken Casey, Charlie Molot, Al Shreders,
and Tom Quigg, second baseman Ken Berglund, shortstop Marvin Shreders, and
first basemen Jack Rosenthal and Randall Watkins. Mike Kearns was the team's
playing manager.
This week in 1951
Two Newtown High athletes combined to score five-and-a-half points at the
Housatonic Valley Schoolman's League Track and Field Championships. Dick
Carlson took second place in the running broad jump (18-7 1 / 2 ) while Bo
Brennan placed fourth in the pole vault (8-foot-4). Darwin Johns also competed
for Newtown, but did not place, Regional High School of Falls Village won the
league title with 54 1 / 2 points followed by New Milford, Litchfield,
Thomaston, Watertown, Bethel, and Newtown. The meet was held at the Hotchkiss
School track.
