The Newtown High boys' lacrosse team got three goals from Jason Hirou, two

from Ben Brower, and a sixth from Eric Lipusz, but was defeated 9-6 by

Fairfield in the " B " Division State Championship game played at Bruce Jenner

Stadium. Eric Lausten made 16 saves in goal. During the halftime break

Newtown's Hirou, Lipusz, Phil Smith, and Will Parker were named to the

Connecticut High School Lacrosse Association's B Division All-State team.

Newtown was coached that season by John Walsh.

Ten-year-old Ross Schieffer got loose on a breakaway and scored the only goal

of the game as he led the Newtown Bandits to a 1-0 semifinal game victory over

Shelton in the Fourth Annual Newtown Memorial Day Kickoff Soccer Tournament.

Schieffer, Steve Nelson, and Ralph Savarese then tallied goals in a 3-0

championship game victory over Bethel as the Bandits became the only local

shutout victories in goal while Ernie Badillo, Jesse Meyer, and Jeff

The number combination " 10-9 " certainly wasn't the lottery winner for the

Newtown High girls' softball team who lost the Western Connecticut Conference

championship game and then its first-round CIAC state tournament game, both by

that score. In the WCC final, Newtown fell to Immaculate in the eleventh

inning on a squeeze bunt. Freshman Kim DeCarlo was the losing pitcher and also

led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Dawn Parrott ripped a

three run triple and Dori Cofer a two-run single to spark the offense as well.

Newtown fell 10-9 to Bunnell three days later. DeCarlo finished her freshman

season with a 12-7 record and was named to the All-WCC team along with

teammates Laura Gollinghorst and Sue Roman.

Newtown High School track and field records were dropping like flies as the

Lady Indians competed at the CIAC Class M Sectional Championships. Wendy

Dickerson won sectional championships in the both 100 and 220 yard dash

events, setting a new school record with her 11.3 in the 100. Pam Dickerson

also captured a sectional crown as she won the 80-yard hurdles ahead of

teammate Tracy Kreizinger, who finished second. Cheryl Hensel set an NHS

record in the half mile with a time of 2:33.2 which placed her second in the

race. Doretta Kearns earned third place in the two-miles and also set a school

record with a 12:34. Newtown's Jeralyn Taubert also garnered a state sectional

title by winning the discus event and taking third in the javelin. With their

fine efforts the girls were six of eleven NHS athletes who qualified for the

Class M State Championships.

the Sandy Hook lads, several boys had been left home with bad report cards.
