This week in 1991
Tom and Jeff Wyatt combined to hit eight home runs with 23 RBI as Gervais Bros
Roofing defeated 100 Church Hill 23-9 and Savoy Linen 11-4 in the
opening-round games of the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League's 'A' Division
playoff tournament. Gary Pepe and Kevin Wilkison each slammed a pair of home
runs for the defending league champions as well. George Matern went 5-for-5
and Dave Kingsly 4-for-4 for Savoy.
This week in 1986
Twelve-year-old Patty Murren scored a triple crown at the new England Junior
Tennis Championships at Yale University. Murren on the singles championship,
the double championship, and was presented with the tournament's Sportsmanship
Award as well. She then returned home to Newtown to compete in the Bertram
Stroock Tournament where she had won championships in women's singles, women's
doubles, and mixed doubles at age eleven.
This week in 1981
Newtown's Brian Burke captured his third Men's Club Championship in four years
at Rock Ridge Country Club, as he shot a four-round total of 293 to defeat
second-place Dick Capozzi by eight strokes. Bill Tinkler and Dave Nyden tied
for third place with scores of 309. The tournament used medal play for the
first time on the decision of Rock Ridge golf professional, Bob Geambazi.
This week in 1976
Fifteen Newtown swimmers combined to win a total of 35 awards at the
Candlewood Invitational Championships held at Shepaug Valley Regional School.
Leading the way for the locals was ten-year-old Holly Constant who won three
trophies including one for first place in the 25 breast. Other winners
included Jeff James, Steve Hiteshew, Dave Hiteshew, Dori DeMeo, Brian
Karcheski, Dave Van Epps, Bryan Van Epps, Drew Karpacz, Ed Sherman, Peter Van
Varick, and Nancy Kayfus.

The Newtown girls' fastpitch softball team concluded its first year of
competition in the Danbury Women's League with a record of 5-8 under coaches
Bob Merrill, Larry Kennedy, and John Wilson. The team included Diane
Lauricella, Nancy Tibbets, Pam Skelton, Carol Butler, Donna Tibbets, Machelle
Marrill, Betty Bouclier, Gale Gollenberg, Jan Weber, Nancy Smith, Scout
Kennedy, Kathy Blood, Pat Honan, Roin Komornick, Helene Stickle, Holly
Komornick, Rita Kovacs, Sandy Martin, Irene Nunes, and scorekeeper Alice
Sekayouna.
This week in 1966
Lou Iasiello defeated two-time defending Newtown Country Club champion Emmy
Farrell on the 35th hole of their playoff match to earn his second Men's Club
Championship title in 20 years. Iasiello had won the title 19 years previous.
Doug Rogers, meanwhile, won the First Flight title over Ted Jones, and Les
Burroughs captured the Second Flight over Bob Tynan.
