This week in 1991

The Newtown Tennis Association Laurel Cup team lost to Ridgewood Country Club

in the finals of the Laurel Cup Tennis Tournament. It was the first time in

the program's history that Newtown had made the finals. Jared Tendler, Sue

White, and Val Mauriello won singles matches while White and Mauriello

combined for a doubles victory as well. Also competing were David Waite, Paul

Dohrenwend, Preston Meyer, Ali Bernstein, Rebecca Gordon, Ross Schieffer and

John Mazzariello.

This week in 1986

Church Hill Gastop took the A Division championship in the 19-team Danbury

Dusty Golf League with a remarkable finish too the regular season. Fred

Crouch, Tom Ramsdell, Danny Ross, Greg O'Connor, Mike Cragin, Kevin Cragin,

Pete Duhamel, Doug Otton and Lee Davenson took to the links that summer.

This week in 1981

In a best-ball member-guest tournament at Rock Ridge Country Club, the team of

Jo Spinella, Marcia Dolan, Sylvia Kaufman and Cele Borofsky captured low gross

prize of 75. Winning the low net prize, with a 51, was the team of Min Golden,

Sally Friend, Shirley Gold and Mrs Ratner.

This week in 1976

Irene Knudsen, Mike Hoitko, Rita Murphy and Vin Kean were the winners in the

Newtown Country Club's Seniors Tournament. Capturing the men's club

championship was Sven Tilly, who had to defeat Emmie Farrell, 1-up, in their

36-hole match (Farrell had the lead for 29 holes). Winning the women's

championship was Eunice Boynton, who defeated Kathy Ross, 3 and 2.
