This week in 1991

Drew Arnold and Joanne Klopfenstein defeated Larry Washington and Lorraine

Chappell, respectively, to win the men's and women's singles championships at

the Bertram A Stroock Tennis Tournament. The title was the fifth in six years

for Arnold and the fourth in five yers for Klopfenstein. The two then teamed

up to win their fifth-straight mixed doubles crown. Meanwhile, Wendy White and

Shelby Lance joined forces to win the women's doubles while Tom Peel and Larry

Washington won the men's doubles event.

This week in 1986

Scott Mosely and Susan Baxter - Faber were the top male and female finishers

at the Third Annual Newtown Bee 10-K Road Race. Mosely, of Danbury, finished

the race in 34:30, 13 seconds ahead of Newtown High School junior, Joe Smith.

Baxter-Faber, of Naugatuck, was the sixth overall finisher with a time of

35:42. Other top ten finishers included Wallie Jahn, Rusty Briggs, William

Stone, Rudy Sroka, Tim Crispyn, and Eddie Butt. A total of 181 runners

completed the race.

This week in 1981

Joe LaCava defeated Frank Bolander 1-up to defend his Newtown Country Club

Junior Club Championship. LaCava and Bolander, both 17 and seniors at Newtown

High School, were the NHS golf team's first and second players last spring.

This week in 1976

The Newtown Police concluded a perfect 14-0 season with a subsquent

championship title in the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball's 'B' Division. The

unbeated team included Jack Qubick, Rich Stook, Ray Tomkins, Owen Gallagher,

Bob Tvardzik, Bob Taylor, Dave Lydem, John Kotch, Bob Braatz, Tom Kearns, Bob

Berkins, Phil Mazzaco, Fred Kasbarian, Mike DeJoseph, and Jeff Kocet.

This week in 1971

Kevin Cragin was low-gross winner and Ron Coleman captured low-net as the boys

who caddied all summer at Newtown Country Club faced off in the NCC Caddy

Tournament. Other caddies who competed in the tourney were Scott Rogers, Kip

Bowers, Larry Gallo, Dave Tilly, Joe Fico, Kevin Booker, Tom Bresson, Dave

Severs, Richard Blood, Phillip Bell, Mike Sikorski, Steve Wehmeyer, and Pat

Quigg.

This week in 1966

Owen Gallagher was named by the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department to

replace the legendary Harold S DeGroat as Director of Town Recreation.

Gallagher is a physical education teacher at Middle Gate School. A graduate of

the University of Bridgeport, Arnold College Division, he has a wide

experience in a variety of sports.

This week in 1961

A brief ceremony was held at Dickinson Park as the Newtown Lions Club

officially presented the new tennis courts and shelter to the town. The courts

were given in memory of Henry G Carlson and Rudolf C Berkemann - two past

Lions Club presidents - and a bronze plaque was unveiled by the two mens'

widows. Master of ceremonies, Richard Hibbard (current Lions president) also

said words in honor of Bertram A Stroock, who donated the park to the town,

and former Newtown First Selectman, A Fenn Dickinson, for whom the park is

named.
