Congregation Preparing To Celebrate Its Fifth Anniversary
Congregation Preparing To Celebrate Its Fifth Anniversary
By Nancy K. Crevier
It has been five years since Pastor Tim Kuhn and his wife, Cindi, left the comfort of a salaried position as associate pastor under Pastor Paul Auckland in Sellersville, Penn., and trusting in God, moved to Newtown to share their beliefs. They have done so by reaching out to the unchurched and inviting them to worship at Faith at Newtown, celebrating each Sunday, at 10 am, in the spare above Porcoâs Karate Academy studio on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook.
âI felt the Lord had put this burden on my heart, to come to Newtown and teach the Bible,â said Pastor Kuhn. He had had a student of discipleship at the Pennsylvania congregation from Newtown, and it was through this connection that the Kuhns came to New England.
âWe were at a point where our children were adults, and I wanted to spend my last years in a place where I could teach the Bible in a way and in a place where people had not heard of that kind of teaching before,â said Pastor Kuhn. âI didnât know what would happen, but based on Matthew 28:19-20 (âGo therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the ageâ), I trusted. He is always with us,â he said.
His early goals of reaching the unchurched in this area have been successful, Pastor Kuhn said, with a regular attendance of between 30 and 45 people who have received a genuine understanding of the Scripture and a love of the Bible and its teachings.
âItâs not a feel-good sermon, itâs what the Bible says to us. Itâs a clear exposition,â he said. Studying the Bible, verse by verse, and applying it to every day living, said Pastor Kuhn, is what Faith at Newtown is about.
Faith at Newtown offers opportunities for young people and adults to welcome God into their daily lives, through relationship building events such as Vacation Bible School, gym nights, swimming and hiking activities, family fun nights and bible study, scavenger hunts, and road rallies held at various venues. Always, said Pastor Kuhn, the event includes a Biblical thought that is pertinent to the participants.
In celebration of this growth, a âharvestâ that Pastor Kuhn credits to a God that has blessed them, Faith at Newtown is planning a special Fifth Anniversary Service on Sunday, August 19, at 10 am. The service will be in Edmond Town Hall, and is open to the public. The regular worship service will also include testimonies from people who have come to faith in the congregation, as well as special speaker, Pastor Paul Auckland.
A free luncheon will be served in The Alexandria Room of the Edmond Town Hall, following the service.
Faith at Newtown continues to set goals as it enters its sixth year. The congregation would like to get into a permanent location.
âWith a building, we could provide other programs,â Pastor Kuhn said. The congregation is also seeking a music leader and a youth leader.
