Commandant’s Cavalcade

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) will host a first of its kind event in Newtown — the Commandant’s Cavalcade 2012 — at 2GHG headquarters, 4 Wildlife drive, to celebrate and raise funds supporting the guard. The horse guard is an active cavalry unit serving the governor and the state.

Taking place Saturday, August 11, the full-day, family-fun event will be conducted in two parts, beginning with a marketplace that will be open from 11 am through 5 pm, filled with artisans and craftspeople, entertainment, delectable food vendors serving everything from barbecue to cotton candy, agricultural and equine vendors, farm animals, horse breeders and much. Admission is free, rain date is August 12.

This whole-day, family-fun event continues into the evening with a live show  — tickets are $28, $23 seniors and ages 12 and under, $18 veterans — featuring a performance by Tommie Turvey and His Amazing Horses (6 to 8 pm), starting with an opening act from the Second Continental Light Dragoons of Connecticut, as well as a special guest appearance by Cathie Hatrick-Anderson performing her mounted shooting act.

Tommie Turvey has been in more than ten movies as a stuntman and has performed at venues like the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, the Hollywood Charity Horse Show, and Night of the Horse in Del Mar, Calif., as well as Disneyland Paris.

As a professional stuntman and trainer, he has appeared with his horses in Jonah Hex, AMC’s The Walking Dead, Batman: Dark Night, HBO’s John Adams and more. He was also the stunt trainer / coordinator for The Greening of Whitney Brown, a one-night-only feature at Edmond Town hall on Friday, August 10, at 7 and 9 pm.
