FIRST WAREHOUSE GALLERY AUCTION SUCCESSFUL FOR G & CO. w/6 cuts
DEDHAM, MASS. - Grogan & Company held its first Warehouse Gallery Auction at
its new location in Dedham on May 29 and 30. The two-day auction offered
jewelry, silver, paintings and Oriental rugs and netted over a half million
dollars in sales. "We are pleased to be operating out of our own space again,"
quoted Michael Grogan, president and chief auctioneer, "Our clients were
pleased with the exhibition space and the turn out for both sales was
excellent."
The highlight of the jewelry sale, a diamond and platinum bow brooch by J.E.
Caldwell, sold for $8,050 (est $7/9,000) and a diamond and ruby brooch in the
form of a swallow also by J.E. Caldwell sold for $3,450 (est $1/1,500).
The silver session realized the highest prices of the sale. A four piece tea
service and tray, blossom pattern, by Danish maker Georg Jensen brought
$12,650 (est $5/7,000); and a flatware service, acanthus pattern, by the same
maker sold for $12,075 to a last minute phone bidder. Four Georgian
candlesticks formerly from the collection of the Countess of Essex fetched
$6,612.50 (est $3/5,000).
Works on paper were the featured highlights of the paintings session and
included "Rolling Down," a contemporary gouache by Alexander Calder, which
fetched $10,350 and "View from the Sandcastle," a watercolor by Sears
Gallagher, which brought $4,600. Two rare watercolors of songbirds by
well-known author and illustrator Roger Tory Peterson, sold for $2,645
(unsigned) and $2,875 (signed) to a private collector. "Quail and Grouse," by
another well-known bird illustrator, Francis Lee Jaques, fetched $2,300 (est
$400/600). "The Swan," an impressionistic oil on canvas circa 1917 by Chicago
artist Benjamin Kelman, brought $5,715, a potential auction record for this
artist. "Kneeling Amenhotep III," an oil on canvas by American artist, Joseph
Lindon Smith, sold for $7,475.
