Police Chase Ends In New Haven
Newtown police report that a police chase which originated in Newtown early on
the morning of June 5 involved local officers and six other police departments
pursuing two youths in a stolen car about 25 miles to New Haven.
Police said that while on patrol about 12:30 am, Officer Thomas Fitzsimmons
spotted a 1996 Buick station wagon traveling on Mile Hill Road with its
headlights off.
Police attempted to stop the Buick, but its driver would not stop, police
said.
The Buick then turned onto Route 34, with police pursuing it with their
flashing lights and sirens on.
During the course of the normal speed chase, Newtown police enlisted the aid
of police from Monroe, Seymour, Shelton, Derby, West Haven and New Haven.
Eventually the Buick drove into a fire hydrant in New Haven, causing it to
stop, police said.
Police then learned that the vehicle had been stolen from a residence near the
area where they had first spotted it.
A Newtown police car received minor damage in the pursuit, police said.
Police charged the driver, Troy Nelson, 17, of New Haven, with first-degree
criminal trover, first-degree larceny, evading responsibility, reckless
driving, engaging police in pursuit, and operating a motor vehicle without a
driver's license.
Police charged the passenger, Dontay Hopkins, 16, of New Haven, with
first-degree criminal trover, first-degree larceny and interfering with
police.
Each youth was held on a $1,000 bond for arraignments later that day in
Danbury Superior Court.
