Brush Fire Ignited By Firebomb
Sandy Hook firefighters responded to a set brush fire late Sunday night off
Jo-Mar Drive reported by a motorist passing by on nearby Interstate-84,
according to Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company Chief Bill Halstead.
Chief Halstead said someone apparently threw a firebomb, commonly known as a
"Molotov cocktail," against a rock causing the device to explode and burn
adjacent vegetation in a « to â¹-acre area.
The fire was set off on the isolated section of Jo-Mar Drive closest to I-84.
The fire call came in just after 11 pm.
Firefighters saturated the area with water to prevent the blaze from
restarting, the chief said.
The fire didn't pose any threat to houses in the area, Chief Halstead said.
There were no injuries or damage to property.
Firefighters collected evidence of the set fire at the scene and will hold it
for analysis, the chief said.
The Bancroft Road area in Riverside was the scene of a series of firebomb
incidents last fall.
