Ed Ink: An Opportunity To Serve

The services that people render unto each other without compensation (and

often without thanks) in this town are remarkable. When people need a helping

hand, more often than not, someone steps forward with a hand outstretched.

There is a group of volunteers, however, who have committed more than their

hands and a little bit of their time. Members of Newtown's volunteer emergency

services commit themselves body and soul to providing expert assistance to

people in extreme distress. These are people who are already dedicated to

their families and jobs who find the extra time that most of us never seem to

have to rigorously train and serve.

An opportunity is now at hand for people who are interested in joining this

elite group of Newtown volunteers. The Newtown Ambulance Corps, in conjunction

with Danbury Hospital, has scheduled a 120-hour course to train emergency

medical technicians. The course, a basic requirement for ambulance volunteers,

imparts skills that can literally mean the difference between life and death.

The training and subsequent service in the ambulance corps requires the kind

of focus and life-affirming hard work that many of us would like to find in

our lives, but don't always. It can make a difference in the lives of others

-- and your own. For more information about this opportunity, call the

ambulance garage at 270-4380 and leave your name and telephone number. Someone

will call you back. Or call Debbie Aubin at 426-6874.
