EARLY TIN AT WM. MORFORD

(with cuts)

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. -- Bidding activity was reportedly strong in William Morford's

15th semi-annual absentee auction, which closed December 5. The unreserved

sale consisted mostly of unusual antique advertising items but also included

items from other collectible fields as well.

There was significant interest in early tins and packaging. The top tin was a

Planters Peanut Butter one pound sized can, which realized $5,170.

Included among the one-pound coffee tins was a Rose of Kansas, which sold at

$1,017.50; a Welcome Guest, missing lid, which brought $1,705; a Piggly Wiggly

Stores "Sanico" brand, which garnered $1,485; a D.C. & H. tin, which realized

$1,760; and a Table King Coffee tin, which brought $962.50.

Other tins included a paper label "Dog-on-Good Cigar" can, which brought

$2,310; a White Goose brand spice can which sold for $1,045; and a one quart

Ronson Motor Oil can which reached $1,375;

A new auction record, according to the firm, was established for a tire patch

tin when a favorite brand example fetched $935.

Included among many advertising signs was a small cardboard stand-up with Ted

Williams promoting Moxie Soda, which sold for $1,925; a Kodak Camera window

display sign of a couple in a canoe, which brought $1,650; a small colorful

porcelain Mayo's Tobacco picturing a rooster, which sold for $1,705; a tin

litho soda sign for "Captain Kidd" Beverages, which rang up $1,650; a

self-framed tin litho "Great Western Farm Machinery" sign, which brought

$1,870; and a pair of stand-up signs for Sealy Mattresses, which reached

$1,760.

A spool holder advertising Clarks Thread, with suffragette theme, sold for

$1,430; a one-pound Baby Bunting brand cardboard oats box garnered $1,430, a

new auction record for an oatmeal box, according to the gallery; a display box

with 20 unopened packs of Florida Brand chewing gum, sold for $2,530; and an

occupational shaving mug for a tour boat operator realized $5,060.
