Ferneley Painting At Sothebys
(with cut)
NEW YORK CITY -- An important painting by British sporting artist John E.
Ferneley, Sr (British, 1782-1860), sold for $1,102,500 on April 9 at
Sotheby's, setting a new world record price for the artist at auction.
"Captain Horatio Ross on `Clinker' with Lord Kennedy's `Radical' Ridden by
Captain Douglas Beyond," was signed, inscribed and dated, "Clinker Melton
Mowbray/March 31, 1826." The date refers to the celebrated match between Sir
Francis Holyoake's "Clinker" ridden by Captain Horatio Ross and Lord Kennedy's
"Radical" ridden by Captain Douglas.
"Clinker" was a celebrated thoroughbred in the 1830s and the painting was
commissioned by Captain Ross to commemorate his famous victory over "Radical".
John E. Ferneley, Sr was the premier artist to record the racing and hunting
world of mid-Nineteenth Century England, particularly in North Leicestershire,
and the center of British hunting, the town of Melton Mowbray. The oil
painting, which measures 42â¹ by 61â¹ inches, was estimated at $300/500,000.
