Slawinski First 1999 Sale

FELTON, CALIF. -- Slawinski Auction Company conducted its first auction of the

new year on January 3, reporting excellent attendance and strong bids on a

number of major pieces. Telephone and absentee bidders from 11 states

participated.

Top lot was a Regina floor standing music box playing 27 inch disks. In fine

untouched original condition, it garnered considerable attention before

selling at $15,000. Another, even rarer, Regina upright playing 32 inch disks

sold for $5,000 due to some losses and restoration. Three table top Regina

music boxes playing 15« inch disks sold between $3,200 and $4,250. A Wurlitzer

Nickelodeon in a nice oak case with leaded glass panels sold at $2,750, a

French singing bird box at $1,750, and an interesting musical automata

tantalus set, $1,400. A Duplex phonograph attracted a number of serious

bidders, selling in house for $7,500.

A large selection of Victorian furniture was highlighted by a Wooton standard

grade patent secretary at $12,000. A very fine Eastlake marbletop dresser,

probably of New York origin, sold at $3,000, as did a large marbletop center

table, measuring 51 inches across. A signed ten piece Kittinger dining room

set went to the trade at $3,750, a very fancy oak side by side at $1,600, and

a Federal style four poster bed circa 1880, $1,750.

Paintings included a large oil on canvas in the manner of Fransisco Aurburan

for $9,000. The full-length life size portrait of Saint Peter Nolasco was part

of the Mission Inn of Riverside, Calif. for most of this century and the

estate had provenance back to the Eighteenth Century. A cast bronze plaque of

Theodore Roosevelt by James E. Fraser brought $1,100, a large pastoral

landscape by Victor Binet, $2,000, and large pastel by Paul Koehler of a

wooded scene with a cabin with figures, $400.

Other items included a Victorian brass light fixture with griffins at $1,550,

an extensive gold charm bracelet which earned a bid of $700, an Edward Curtis

large format photogravure was a bargain at $200, and a large service of Gorham

"Strasbourg" sterling flatware at $4,200. An Elgin 14k gold pocketwatch was a

buy at $175.
