New Park Playgrounds Are On The Drawing Boards
Plans are under way to build two new playgrounds at Treadwell Park by May.
Before they can get started, however, organizers must first come up with the
funding.
According to playground organizer Tammy Marks, the Treadwell Park Playground
Committee will begin soliciting funds for the playground later this month.
Fund-raising will be done primarily through telephone solicitations. The
committee believes it can reach its goal if every household in Newtown donated
as little as $10. The committee is also seeking corporate sponsorships. A
special plaque will be placed at the two play areas to recognize any person or
organization that donates $150 or more.
The two play areas will be located near the parks swimming pool. The old play
area will be removed and a playground designed for toddlers and young children
will be put up in its place. The second playground will be situated at the end
of the turn around and will be for older children. Both units will be
installed over blacktop, which will be covered with special cushioned tiles.
The playground equipment will be made from material similar to that at Hawley
School, since the maintenance of a "Funspace" type area is very expensive.
Mrs Marks said she first became involved in the playground plan after reading
a Park and Rec flier which said the department was looking for someone to head
up the fund-raising.
In addition to the telephone solicitation, money jars will be placed in the
cafeterias of each of the elementary schools. Also, students will have the
opportunity to suggest a name for the park at a cost of $1.
