Paperweights From The Collection Of Fairchild Fetch $576,010
NEW YORK CITY -- Sotheby's sale of paperweights from the collection of F.
Regnault and Frances C.D. Fairchild totalled $576,010 on June 16, more than
double the pre-sale estimate, with 100 percent of the lots finding buyers.
The 118 paperweights included several that sold well above their estimates,
among them a Clichy concentric millefiori moss ground weight (est $20/25,000)
which sold for $96,000 to a private collector.
Lauren K. Tarshis, director of the firm's paperweight department, said, "I was
extremely pleased to see many new faces in the salesroom and even more excited
to see two new American private buyers participating in the upper end of the
market."
Other highlights included a rare "Pantin" lizard weight (est $30/50,000),
illustrated in the annual bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors' Association
in 1982, which sold for $57,500. A rare St Louis signed and dated concentric
millefiori weight, 1848 (est $5/7,000) sold for $37,375, more than five times
its high estimate.
