MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA -- The Gene Harris Antique Auction Center was filled with
lots from the estate of Mr and Mrs Archie Peterson, of Gowrie, Iowa on
Saturday, March 20. Top bid of $5,500 was captured by an American tall case
clock, made in Pittsburgh by clockmaker James Thompson (circa 1810-1820). The
six-hour long auction was conducted in catalog order, and this mahogany maple
eight-day beauty came very close to being offered. Telephone bidders competed
with the in-house crowd.
The other top lot was "The Princess," an early tobacconist display with
feathered headdress, offering cut plug tobacco and a handful of cigars. She
attracted telephone bidders and sold for $5,500. There were 164 registered
bidders from twenty-four states, plus Puerto Rico. All prices reflect the
actual hammer price.
The second tall case clock in the Peterson collection was a German "Elite"
nine-tube grandfather in mahogany case, moon dial, which brought $4,400.
With both rounded and flat glass, an early countertop display fixture with
archtop showcase units, sold for $3,900, and a two piece mahogany bowfront
china cabinet with mirrored median shelf and animal carved paw feet hit fourth
place with a bid of $3,500.
A Georgian style mahogany chest on cabinet with locking drawers sold at
$3,300. Cast by "A. Fulton, Pittsburg" and carrying the date 1848 and bas
relief figure of woman with fawn, a bell with fittings went for $3,150. With
multicolor slag glass peeping from underneath an ornately arched and filigreed
frame depicting cherubs in a garden, a large electrified table lamp sold at
$3,100.
Two lots at $3,000 were a carved wooden countertop cigar store display of
Napoleon with a bundle of fine cigars, and a mahogany console table with
ornate carved detail.
Carrying its provenance cast in iron, "Sambo," a hitching post made by "R.
Wood & Co, Phila." brought $2,600. Fit for royalty, a Meriden silverplate
centerpiece, with rampant lions flanking a fine, decorated opalescent glass
fitting, clawed its way to $2,250.
