Tax Rate Set At 26.9 Mills
The Legislative Council set the tax rate at 26.9 mills for the 1998-99 fiscal
year at its regular meeting Wednesday night.
Tax bills to pay for the $59.3 million budget approved earlier this month will
be sent out to all homeowners in late June.
The average home in Newtown is assessed at between $175,000-$200,000.
Therefore, the average tax bill will be between $4,700-$5,300.
According to the assessor's office, there are 9,774 total accounts in town
(vacant lots and homes), of which 7,696 are homes.
Newtown residents own a total of 20,809 motor vehicles, each with an average
assessment of $7,000.
The following is a list of the top 10 taxpayers in Newtown and their net
assessed value, according to the 1997 grand list:
