Roof Fire Stopped Quickly At Rand-Whitney

(with photo)

Roofers working atop the Rand-Whitney Container cardboard box plant on Edmond

Road May 14 inadvertently ignited a section of wall, according to Sandy Hook

Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company Chief Bill Halstead.

Sandy Hook and Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters responded to the blaze

just after 8 am.

Roofers, using an electric saw and torches, accidentally ignited paper dust

which was inside the wall, Chief Halstead said. The factory was evacuated.

There were no injuries.

The factory's fire brigade was putting out the blaze as firemen arrived, the

chief said. The fire damaged a limited area including a wall section, some

roofing and a ventilator. A damage estimate wasn't available.

Union Camp Corp sold the factory to Rand-Whitney for $2.9 million last

December.
