Christies Appoints President Of Internet Auctions
NEW YORK CITY -- Christie's announced on May 5 the appointment of Andrew
Schoelkopf to the newly created position of president, Christie's Internet
Auctions. In his new role, Schoelkopf will be responsible for the vision,
organization and leadership to finalize and implement the strategy of
Christie's entry into the Internet auction market.
Christie's plans to launch the firm's first online auction in September 1999.
Initial online sales will likely feature the fields of books and manuscripts,
photographs, prints, and collectibles.
Christie's Internet Auctions hopes to establish strong links between the
firm's high volume auction businesses, particularly Christie's East in New
York and Christie's South Kensington in London. Schoelkopf, along with Cathy
Elkies, the president of Christie's East, will work with Paul Barthaud,
managing director of Christie's South Kensington, who will co-ordinate the
management of these businesses.
Prior to this appointment, Schoelkopf was a senior vice president of business
development and senior director of Christie's American paintings and sculpture
department since June 1998.
Schoelkopf joined Christie's in 1991 as a specialist in the American paintings
department. He was appointed head of the American paintings and sculpture
department in February 1995 and senior vice president in April 1997.
