Middle School Drama Club To Stage "Our Miss Brooks"

(with photos)

BY ANN MARIE COHEN

The Newtown Middle School's Drama Club will be performing the musical comedy,

Our Miss Brooks. It will be presented on March 19 and 20, at 7 pm, at the

Newtown Middle School Auditorium.

The drama club has been putting in long hours of rehearsing under the

direction of Chris Canfield and Jonathan Pope. The two teach at the middle

school.

Mr Pope is a music teacher and choral director, and Mr Canfield is a science

teacher at the middle school. Mr Canfield has acted in community theatre for

the past five years. He is one of the Sherman Players at the Sherman

Playhouse.

The two have worked as a team with the intent of creating quality productions

at the middle school. Last year, The Truth about Cinderella was presented and

was a hit at the school. Mr Canfield remembers, "We were turning people away

at the door."

The production will also feature live music, thanks to the talents of Peter

Obre on guitar, Jonathan Pope on piano, Mark Mahoney, jazz band instructor, on

drums, and possibly a bass player, who is yet to be recruited.

The star role of Miss Brooks will be played by Amanda Tredger. Other leading

roles feature Jack Sparacino as the principal, and Brett Boles who plays the

coach.

Brett Boles is a member of community theatre at the Sacred Heart Center for

Performing Arts at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield. He recently played the

part of Winthrop in the musical, The Music Man.

Brett concluded, "I've always wanted to act as a career. There is a lot of

talent here, and we're having a lot of fun. Overall, it's gonna be great!"

Tickets will cost $5 and may be purchased during lunch at the middle school

cafeteria. Tickets will also be available at the door.
