YORK, PA. -- After many days of rain, the Memorial Day weekend sale by York

Town Auction at the York Fairgrounds opened to sun and warm temperatures.

Starting with books, documents, smalls, and a collection of Flow Blue, the

auction moved outside for 22 lots of Oriental rugs. A worn antique Serapi,

6'7", sold for $3,500 (est $1,5/2,200).

Jewelry was next to cross the block. A platinum and diamond bracelet watch

sold for $9,000, and a Swiss repeating watch sold for $4,900. Among art glass,

china, silver and iron garden furniture, a Gothic pattern bench and two

armchairs, once owned by Gov Pinchot of Pennsylvania, sold for $2,100 (est

$1,4/1,600). In the toys and banks section, a cast iron novelty bank (est

$500/700) soared to $1,500. It was followed by a bulldog bank, which sold for

$1,225, just topping its high estimate.

In the afternoon, American furniture was front and center, with major pieces

of local origin, representing York, Lancaster, Berks and Chester counties. A

walnut Federal tallcase clock, signed Schollaberger, sold for $22,500; a

cherry Lancaster kas sold for $20,500; a cherry Lancaster candlestand brought

$13,500; and a walnut Chester County semi-high chest, dated 1757, sold for

$12,750.

Also of local interest, a Lancaster County sampler, dated 1822, from Isabella

Samples' school, sold for $11,000 (est $4/6,000). A group of early painted

wooden signs collected over many years from Harrisburg brought $1,700, more

than double its high estimate. A single-faced large sign from the "People's

Store" brought $2,400 (est $400/600).

Late in the 917 lot sale, a theorem on velvet sold for $1,500 (est $1/1,200)

and a large York County split column frame in the original black and gold

paint sold for $1,150, more than tripling its high estimate.

York Town's next sale will be Saturday, August 29, at the Valencia Ballroom in

York, Penn. Prices quoted do not reflect a 10 percent buyer's premium. For
