Fine Art Sweeps Hart Auction

HOUSTON, TEX. -- Hart Galleries packed them in at its two-day aucton on June

27 and 28. Major consignors included Dr Jack P. Abbott, Nina Lee Kraft Burt,

Neal Prince, and property from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Eight hundred

lots were disposed of for an undisclosed gross, the starring lots being oils

on canvas.

Fetching the top price of $41,000, an oil on canvas laid on board, by Percival

Leonard Rosseau (American, 1859-1937), "Evening Glow," signed on the lower

left and dated 1926 (est $10/15,000), went to a dealer. The subject of the

painting was a field scene with two hunting dogs.

A second, smaller oil on canvas by Rosseau, depicting the same subject (est

$3/5,000), went to a dealer at $17,000.

An oil on canvas by Nineteenth Century Italian artist Conda de Satriano,

"Narcissus," signed and dated "'93", fetched $16,000; a figured walnut

Chippendale style highboy, circa 1840, reached $5,500; a Favrile glass and

bronze bell desk lamp by Tiffany Studios, 13« inches high, garnered $3,400;

and a Louis XV style bronze dore figural mantel clock, circa 1860, 30 inches

long by 15 inches high, went out at $3,000.

The red robes of "The Contemplative Cardinal" dominated an oil on canvas by

Eugene Fromentine (French, 1820-1876), which was signed on the lower right

(est $3,5/5,500). It made $2,550. A 12-panel Chinese hand-painted paper and

lacquered coromandel screen, circa 1760-1780, 103 inches high by 204 inches

extended length, brought just above the low estimate at $8,500, and a fine

European silver mounted and carved ivory covered tankard, late

Eighteenth/early Nineteenth Century, 10« inches high, achieved $5,000.

A Chinese Chippendale style mahogany and gilt decorated breakfront cabinet

(est $9/12,000) went out at $7,500; and a sterling silver gallery tray,

hallmarked and dated "Sheffield, 1883," the maker's mark "FS/JH," 15« by 21«

inches, having a wood case (est $1,4/1,800), realized $3,300. The piece was

consigned by the children of the late Henry Davy.

A sterling silver two-handled gadrooned tray, showcased edge, 27 inches in

length, sold at $1,750; a Bailey and Kitchen Sheffield plated water pitcher,

15 inches high, was purchased at $1,100; a pair of Baccarat crystal hurricane

lamps, having enameled decorations and cut crystal prisms, 22 inches high,

went at $800; and a pair of figural porcelain and bronze candelabra, circa

1870, with foliate detail in gilt bronze with floral decorated gilt porcelain

under each candle holder, 19« inches high, reached $2,300.
