Raymond Mann

Raymond S. Mann, 90, a resident of Venice, Fla., and a former resident of

Danbury, died at Danbury Hospital on October 13. He was the husband of the

late Louise Loewe Mann and the father of Barbara M. Bigham of Newtown, a

teacher at Sandy Hook School.

He was born in West Bridgewater, Mass., on August 6, 1908, the son of Ralph H.

and Mabel Simmons Mann. He graduated in 1925 from Dalton High School in

Massachusetts and in 1930 from the University of Massachusetts.

In college he was a member of the basketball team, captain of the football

team, and president of his class for more than 70 years.

He retired from Barden Corporation of Danbury in 1973 as vice president,

employee relations. He was active in the Danbury community, serving as

president of the Danbury Board of Aldermen and the first president of the

combined Common Council of Danbury, a member of Board of Tax Review, president

of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of directors of Union

Savings Bank, president of the Connecticut Personnel Association and a member

of the State Board of Arbitration and Mediation.

He was a member of Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury, the Jacaranda Country

Club in Venice, and a 60-year member of the First Congregational Church in

Danbury.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by a son, Charles R. Mann of

Southbury, a teacher at Newtown High School; another daughter, Jean M. Long of

Manchester; six grandchildren, Katherine Bigham Pino of Brookfield, Douglas K.

Bigham of Arlington, Mass., Steven C. Bigham of Newtown, a reporter for The

Newtown Bee , Raymond H. Long of Greenwoods, Ind., Jonathan M. Long of St

Louis, Mo., Jeffrey C. Mann of Southbury; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held October 17 at 11 am at Hull Funeral Home, 60

Division Street in Danbury, with the Rev Robert Naylor of the First Church of

Christ, Simsbury, officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour

preceding the service. Private burial will be in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Fred T. Blomgren

Fred T. Blomgren, 99, died on October 7, at the Bethel Health Care Center.

Born in Worchester, Mass., July 16, 1899, he was a 70-year resident of Spring

Street, West Bridgewater, Mass., residing the last four years in Newtown with

his daughter, Marie Skelton. He was pre-deceased in 1991 by his wife of 70

years, Ruth Burnley Blomgren.

He was sole proprietor of a family market in Sharon, Mass., in the 1950s,

retiring from Simpson Springs Bottling Co. Throughout his life, he was an avid

gardener and recreational fisherman.

He left a legacy of love and devotion to his family.

In addition to his daughter, Marie, Mr Blomgren is survived by another

daughter, Eleanor Bassett of Beverly Hills, Fla.; six grandchildren, Eileen

Moses of New Milford, Jack Skelton of West Palm Beach, Fla., Ron Skelton of

Newtown, Pam Link of New Milford, Janet Skelton of Ansonia and Donna Smith of

Tucson, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Honan Funeral Home of Newtown. There

will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private.

Johanna Schaufelberger

Johanna C. Schaufelberger, 90, wife of the late Henry W. Schaufelberger and

mother of Roy H. Schaufelberger of Newtown, died October 10, in Hancock Hall,

Danbury.

Mrs Schaufelberger was born in Kisselbrun, Germany, April 18, 1908. She came

to the United States in 1920. She was a resident of Union, N.J., from 1937 to

1996.

In addition to her son, she is survived by three grandchildren.

A graveside service was held October 13 in Hollywood Memorial Park, Union,

N.J.

Phyllis A. Svendsen

Phyllis A. Svendsen, 48, the director of nursing at the Fairfield Manor

Healthcare Center in Norwalk, died unexpectedly October 10 at her home. Mrs

Svendsen resided at 55 Botsford Hill Road, Newtown.

She was born in Arlington, Va., August 21, 1950, a daughter of Phyllis Ahlers

Cochran of Alexandria, Va., and the late Joe B. Cochran.

Mrs Svendsen grew up in Falls Church, Va., and graduated in 1975 with honors

from The Medical College of Virginia, earning a bachelor's degree in Nursing.

She has been a resident of Newtown the past 14 years. She was active with the

Newtown High School Football Team Parents Association. Above all, she will be

remembered as a devoted mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister and good

friend to many.

In addition to her mother, survivors include two sons, Marshall E. Svendsen

and Jarrett A. Svendsen of Newtown; her former husband, Randy L. Svendsen of

Grosse Pointe Pond, Mich.; three brothers, Joe B. Cochran, II, of Falls

Church, Va., Michael Cochran of Harrisonburg, Va., and William Cochran of

Waynesboro, Va.; a sister, Susan Nickens of University Park, Md.; several

nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held October 14 in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main

Street, Newtown. Cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Cemetery,

Bridgeport.

The family requests that donations be made to the Marshall and Jarrett

Svendsen Educational Fund in care of the funeral home.

Catherine Butler

Catherine Butler, 87, wife of the late Harold J. Butler, of 4 Blakeslee Drive,

Newtown, died October 11, at her home.

Mrs Butler was born in New York City October 1, 1911. She was a longtime

resident of New Jersey and had lived in Newtown the past five years. She was a

member of the Newtown Senior Center and attended Almost Family in Danbury.

She is survived by one son, Harold Butler of Plantation Keys, Fla., one

daughter, Elizabeth Illig of Newtown; a brother, Edwin Meehan of New York

City; and a sister, Emily O'Loughlin of Queens, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and

two great-grandchildren, Amanda Illig of Newtown and Joseph Butler of Long

Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Rose Church, Newtown, at

the convenience of the family. Entombment will be at the Mount Calvary

Cemetery Mausoleum, Neptune, N.J. There are no calling hours.

Norma E. Shifflett

Norma E. Kilpatrick Shifflett, 74, of Bridgeport, beloved wife of Mervil L.

Shifflett, died October 12, in St Vincent's Medical Center.

Mrs Shifflett was born in Bridgeport and has been a life long city resident.

She was a retired payroll clerk for the City of Bridgeport Police Department.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four beloved daughters, Cheryl

Lopato and her husband John of Newtown; Linda Pataky and her husband Chuck of

Naugatuck; Gloria Kozlov and her husband Alex of Bridgeport, and Nancy Larkin

of Bridgeport; her beloved brother, William Kilpatrick of Berlin; seven

beloved grandchildren, Jay Lopato, Chuck Pataky, Leanne Lopato, Melissa

Larkin, Sarah Larkin, Becky Pataky and H.J. Larkin; and many loving nieces,

nephews and friends. Mrs Shifflett was predeceased by her son, Robert Lee

Shifflett, and a brother, John Kilpatrick.

A memorial service will be held October 16 at a time to be announced in the

Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown. Interment will be

private at the convenience of the family. Calling hours were scheduled for

October 15 from 4 to 8 pm, at the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street

and Gorham Place, Trumbull.

Benjamin Razza

Benjamin Razza, 98, of 11 Fox Run, Woodbury, died October 14 at Ashlar of

Newtown. He was the husband of Carmela D'Alberto Razza.

Mr Razza was born June 9, 1900 in Sicily, Italy, son of the late Francisco and

Mariantonia Campione Razza. Formerly of Queens, N.Y., he moved to Woodbury in

1997. He retired in 1965 as a cabinet maker for Bloomingdale's of New York

City. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the Italian Army, and he

loved the opera.

Besides his wife of 60 years, he leaves one daughter, Marie A. Finamore of

Woodbury; two grandchildren, Frank Finamore of Queens, N.Y., and Suzanne Gagne

of Newtown; and four great-grandchildren, Vickie and Chrissy Finamore of

Queens, and Madeleine and Lauren Gagne of Newtown.

A funeral mass is October 16 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street

South, Southbury. Burial follows in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, N.Y.

Calling hours were scheduled for October 15 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm in

the daily chapel of the church. Arrangements were by the Capino Funeral Home,

750 Main Street South, Southbury.

Lillian Christensen

Lillian C. Christensen, 92, of Florida, mother of Jon Edwin Christensen of

Newtown, died September 26 at West Melbourne Health Care in West Melbourne,

Fla.

She was born in Dover, N.H., on September 9, 1906, the daughter of the late

Adolf and Carolina Haffner Siebeneicher.

She had summered in the Newtown area.

She moved to Florida from Concord, N.H. in 1989.

She was a graduate of Posse-Nissen College of Physical Education of Boston

University. She was a former executive director for the Girl Scouts for New

Hampshire and Vermont.

She had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Havenwood Nursing

Facility, and 4-H Clubs in Concord, and settlement houses of Boston. She was a

former member of Rebecca Lodge and Community Players of Concord. She was a

former American Mother of the Year for the state of New Hampshire and former

Concord Citizen of the Year.

She was organist and choir director of the Wesley United Methodist Church of

Concord. She also was a professional pianist for the silent movies and the

Boston Youth Symphony.

In addition to her son, she is survived by two daughters, Carol-Joan Malloy of

Hampton Falls, N.H., and Gail Sanders of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla; ten

grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held in Concord, N.H. Donations may be made to the

charity of one's choice.
