ED INK: School Is In The Air

It seems so hard each year to trade in the smell of suntan lotion for the

smell of pencil shavings, but the first intimations of yet another school year

are already in the air, and this week we make it official by presenting our

annual Back-to-School supplement, complete with bus routes and other

information essential for getting back into the school routine.

For those households with children, the next few weeks will be busy ones. In

the rush, however, we urge you to take a moment to support the Backpack

Program, sponsored by the Newtown Junior Women's Club in cooperation with

Newtown Social Services. A $25 donation provides a backpack with essential

school supplies for town children who would not otherwise have them. As a

reminder, on the cover of this year's Back-to-School supplement is a photo

taken by club member Cindy Gerstl of her daughter Jenna Lex to help publicize

the Backpack Program. Please take the time to send your donation, made payable
