Aaron Copland Musical Scores On Exhibit In Stockbridge And Shokan

STOCKBRIDGE, MASS. -- Blue Mountain Books and Manuscripts, Ltd, of Catskill

and Shokan, N.Y., has recently acquired a collection of scores of the works of

the legendary American composer Aaron Copland, each of which is signed in ink

by Copland.

Items include signed copies of the scores for "Appalachian Spring," "Eight

Poems of Emily Dickinson," and the well-known ballets "Billy the Kid" and

"Rodeo."

Of special note is Aaron Copland's own copy of the printed facsimile for the

full orchestra score of "Appalachian Spring Insert," extensively marked up in

red crayon, for performance, and corrected in pencil by the composer. The

title is penned in Copland's hand on a label on the front cover.

Highly significant is Copland's "El Salon Mexico," arranged for two pianos by

Leonard Bernstein, signed in ink by both Copland and Bernstein. There is also

a fabulous association copy of the "Concerto for Clarinet and String

Orchestra," inscribed and signed in ink by both Benny Goodman and Aaron

Copland, as well as the great "Lincoln Portrait," signed by Copland and Andre

Kostelanetz, who commissioned and first performed the work.

Tanglewood, in the Berkshires, was home to Aaron Copland for six weeks every

summer. Copland, who roamed the world restlessly looking for new music and

inspiration, could be said to have no home. The closest he came to spreading

roots was through his annual visit to Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center, a

yearly pilgrimage he began in 1940 and continued until his death.

Items from this collection of music signed by Aaron Copland, as well as books

from the estate of Leonard Bernstein, will be on display and offered for sale

at the Stockbridge Berkshire Antiquaries Book Fair held in the Stockbridge

Plain School on Main Street (Routes 7 and 102), Saturday, July 10 from 10 am

to 4 pm.

When not on exhibit at the book fair, these examples of music signed by Aaron

Copland, books from the estate of American composer and conductor Leonard

Bernstein and other music books will be on display every Friday through Sunday

from 11 am to 5 pm at Blue Mountain Books and Manuscripts, Ltd's, showroom

located inside the bookstore of Editions on Route 28 in Shokan, N.Y. Telephone

518/943-4771.
