(with 4 photos)
FELTON, CALIF. -- Slawinski Auction Company conducted their most recent
estates auction on June 27. A doctor's estate from Monterey provided about one
third of the items, while the balance came from a number of smaller
consignments. Total sales reached nearly $250,000 on 391 lots in the gallery
auction and 186 lots from the silent auction.
A Victorian walnut Renaissance revival two piece bedroom set earned a bid of
$5,000 as did a room size Sarouk circa 1940 measuring 13 by 17 feet. Other
memorable items included a pair of paintings by Edward Moran. A 19 by 30 inch
oil on canvas depicting workers in the field sold at $3,750 while a 30 by 18
inch oil on canvas portrait of a field worker sold at $2,500. A small but very
charming painting by the artist's son, E. Percy Moran, depicting a young lady
at her desk attracted considerable interest before selling to an out-of-state
bidder at $1,750.
Good buys were had on a number of the better furniture lots including a fancy
oak hall bench at $625, a French style marquetry lamp table at $400, a near
mint Hastings 48 inch oak dining table with leaves at $1,250 and a Victorian
walnut lockside chest with burled panels at just $600. A Victorian walnut
cylinder roll secretary with bookcase top went for $1,500.
Other items of interest included a large panoramic photograph showing the
devastation of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, which brought $1,500; a
Handel reverse painted parlor lamp at $2,000; a 42 inch Indian birch bark
canoe with thunderbird decoration which hammered at $450; and a Toonerville
Trolley wind-up toy that was taken home for $350. A group of Caucasian carpets
from the Monterey estate earned some strong bids with one turn-of-the-century
example bringing $2,500.
