Friends Endow Decorative Arts Chair At Yale
(one cut)
NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- The Friends of American Arts at Yale, a group of
collectors, alumni, and others dedicated to supporting the Yale University Art
Gallery's outstanding collection of American paintings, sculpture, and
decorative arts, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
In recognition of the occasion, the Friends have endowed the curatorship of
American decorative arts held by Patricia E. Kane. She will become the first
to hold the position of Friends of American Arts curator of American
decorative arts.
In the past few months, two other gallery positions -- including one in
ancient arts and another in education -- have also been endowed.
The former chairman of the gallery's governing board and his wife endowed
Susan B. Matheson's position. Her title is now The Molly and Walter Bareiss
curator of ancient art.
The present chairman of the governing board and his wife endowed Mary L.
Kordak's position. Her title is the Jan and Frederick Mayer associate curator
of education.
"The art gallery is deeply grateful to the Mayers, Bareisses, and Friends of
American Arts for their thoughtful and tireless commitment to our future,"
said acting director Helen A. Cooper, who is also The Holcombe T. Greene
curator of American paintings and sculpture.
Other already endowed positions at the gallery in addition to Mrs Cooper's are
the director's and the European and contemporary art curator. Jock Reynolds
will become the Henry J. Heinz II director on September 1. Joachim Pissarro is
the Seymour H. Knox, Jr, curator of European and contemporary art.
