Blackwood/March January 6 Fine Art And Antiques Auction Results

ESSEX, MASS. -- Two hundred-ninety-six lots crossed the block at the January 6
Blackwood/March auction. Contents of Wellesley and Cape Ann estates, together
with a Cape Ann art collection, comprised the bulk of the sale.
Top furniture lots were a triple-base mahogany banquet table, which sold at
$3,410; a Massachusetts Neoclassical mahogany card table, which went to a
North Shore collector for $1,980; a mahogany veneered Neoclassical chest,
probably built in Salem, which found a home for $1,100; and a Centennial
bench-made child's slant-lid desk drew bids to $1,210.
Accessories ranged from a carriage clock with painted panels, which induced
bidders to pay $3,740, to a ten-inch brass Chelsea ship's clock, which chimed
in at $2,420, and an early New England banjo clock, which found a home at
$1,320.
Estate jewelry included a one-carat diamond ring, which drew $1,850, and a
diamond and pearl brooch, which attained $1,100.
Nautical artifacts included a launch half model, which sold at $660; another
half model, which was bid to $715; a pair of anchor form andirons, which were
bid to $176; and a whale bone corkscrew, which hit $220.
One hundred thirty works of art found a market. A small Emile A. Gruppe harbor
oil drew bids from across the nation and settled at $4,400. A seven by nine
inch Frederick Mulhaupt street scene realized $2,090, a small Paul Strisik oil
landscape attained $1,045, and an Arthur Diehl city oil found a home at $797.
Prices include a ten percent buyer's premium. The next Blackwood/March auction
is scheduled for early March and will feature Cape Ann and New England
estates.
