A variety of bright and engaging paintings by Meagan Ferriter are on display at Newtown Municipal Center through September 16.

“The Art of Meagan Ferriter” — an exhibition hosted by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission — offers viewers a few dozen large (and a few very large) framed and unframed pieces in acrylics and watercolor. The works are colorful and playful.

Ferriter is a local artist and art teacher for grades Pre K-8 at St Rose School.

Born and raised in West Babylon, N.Y., she remembers, from an early age, experiencing peace and contentment while drawing.

After graduating from Holy Cross as a Russian Language Major and Visual Arts Minor in 2005, she lived in Russia and on the island of Dominica for extended periods of time, teaching orphans and underprivileged children.

In January 2021, Ferriter founded her own art business called Limekiln Studio, which uses a large portion of her earnings from art commissions and private lessons to channel aid to children abroad who are in need.

A portion of her art studio’s sales supports her humanitarian projects in Russia and Dominica. Those projects support teaching art to students in both countries. Two students from Dominica took Ferriter’s art classes virtually through EverWonder Children’s Museum in early 2021.

Ferriter’s art has always been inspired by her love of light in nature and her fascination with young family life. The works on view at the municipal center reflect her growth as an artist over the past two decades.

The presentation also includes a special addition of works by children Ferriter spent time with at the end of July. Continuing the artist’s mission to support children abroad, Ferriter led a watercolor class during which the proceeds from the one-day lesson were promised to a needy family in Dominica.

The colorful results from that class have been installed in the Municipal Center Showcase, where they will also remain on display until mid-September.

The exhibition can be viewed any time the municipal center is open: weekdays from 8 am to 4:30 pm, and later on nights with public meetings.
