Newtown Eight-Year-Olds Shine In Woodbridge
Newtownâs eight-year-old summer baseball team recently competed in the Woodbridge Friendship Tournament and reached the championship round for a runner-up finish. Newtown went 8-0 in round-robin play before receiving a bye, winning one game and then falling to host Woodbridge 7-4 in the championship round of the single-elimination tourney.
In round robin play, Newtown beat Woodbridge 7-6 in a tournament-opening win. Down 3-0 in the third, George Pagett, Ben Harrison, and Jason Hebner all singled and scored to tie the game at three. Woodbridge again took the lead but Colby Olson, Pagett, Harrison and Hebner all singled and scored to complete the comeback effort.
Newtown continued its winning ways, including victories over Southbury, New Canaan, South Meriden and Bethany.
In the win over Soutbury, Connor Barrett, Spencer Burden, Olson and Ryan Kost led the offense. Burden, Olson and Barrett each had two singles and Kost had three doubles. In the win over South Meridan, short stop Adam Bergeron made several nice defensive plays and pitcher Chris Daubert was sharp. Bergeron and Sean Wallace led the offense with three hits apiece. In a 10-2 win over Bethany, Owen McInerney and Wallace each had two hits and Harrison and Kost also had hits. In a 26-run outburst against New Canaan, Bergeron, McInerney, Barrett, Alex Johanesen, Nick Venzia, Kost and Harrison all had three hits and scored twice.
Newtown beat South Meriden in its first finals round game behind the great hitting of Bergeron, who doubled and tripled, and Barrettâs strong pitching. In the championship game against Woodbridge, Newtown fell behind 1-0 but bounced back to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Harrison singled and scored on Barrettâs triple and Wallace drove in the go-ahead run. Woodbridge battled back for a 4-2 lead despite solid defensive work by Daubert who limited the damage. Johanesen doubled home two runs to tie the game in the sixth but Woodbridge answered with three runs in the eighth to seal the scoring.
