Girl Scouts Take On The USS Kearsarge
Girl Scouts Take On
The USS Kearsarge
To the Editor:
Girl Scout Troop #64178 from Southbury traveled to New York City to deliver over 500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to a group of men and women stationed on the USS Kearsarge. The USS Kearsarge, stationed out of Norfolk, Va., was in New York City for Fleet Week. Troop #64178 sent about 60 boxes last year to CTR Scott Kinley who happens to be the uncle of one of the girls. When CTR Scott Kinley heard the ship would be traveling in for Fleet Week this year, he sent an invitation for the girls and their families to visit and get a grand tour of the ship as a thank you.
The girls could not show up empty handed and decided to make this a major project. They asked for the help of the other Southbury Girl Scout Troops, who set up donation boxes and posters at their cookie booths throughout Southbury. The troop would also like to thank the VFW of Southbury, the VFW of Newtown, and the VFW of Newtown Menâs Auxiliary for their very generous cash donations which helped the girls double their cookie donation. Many thanks to the generosity of MTM Transport Inc, out of Newtown, which provided a school bus so that over 40 girls and family members were able to travel into the city to make the big delivery of over 500 boxes of cookies. Without all of this support our troop could never have had such a successful collection and delivery.
