Blackhawks Capture Tournament In New Britain
The Newtown Blackhawks 10-year-old Travel Baseball team won the N.B. Fagan Invitational Tournament in New Britain with a 10-3 win over the Westerfield National team in the championship game this week.
The Blackhawks rebounded from having their undefeated overall tournament record ended in the state playoffs by winning all six of their games in the N.B. Fagan Invitational. The Blackhawks were 17-2 in tournament play this year and won the Jimmy Fund and Cal Ripken district tourneys.
In the Fagan tournament, Jack Proccaccini led the team with a sizzling .706 batting average and knocked in nine runs. Dave Matthews had two home runs and 15 runs batted in. Matt Maturo batted .563 and had 13 RBI; Tim Krapf batted .588 and played solid defense behind the plate; Luke Rustici pitched nine strong innings to earn two victories and had a key two-out hit to start a four-run rally to seal a victory; Alex Klang had a triple and scored five runs; Michael Doyle hit .500 with three doubles; Michael Parker pitched four scoreless innings, earned a victory and batted .500; Curtis Williamson scored eight runs and had an on base percentage of .500; Jaret Devellis had an on base percentage of .600; Ethan Carpenter had an on base percentage of .667 and batted .400; and Zach Aumeuller had one hit and played solid defense.
The team was coached in the tournament by Dave Matthews, Mike Maturo, Tim Doyle and Jim Parker.Â
