âREMBRANDT: THE CONSUMMATE ETCHERâ OPENS AT HOUSATONIC MUSEUM SEPT. 6 w/1 cut
avv/gs 8/8 #708671
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. â âRembrandt: The Consummate Etcher and other Seventeenth Century Printmakersâ will be on view at the Housatonic Museum of Art Thursday, September 6, through October 28.
The exhibition has been organized by Syracuse University culled from works from the universityâs art collection. An opening reception for the public will be Thursday, September 6, from 5:30 to 7 pm.
Rembrandt created just under 300 etchings during his lifetime. According to scholar Kahren Jones Arbitman, âRembrandtâs unsurpassed mastery of the medium [is] apparent in his technical innovations and his stylistic advancements,â she said, âRembrandtâs genius as an etcher lies in his recognition that this medium responds best to the light touch of a innovations and his stylistic advancements.â
Curator Domenic J. Iacono has organized the show thematically: landscapes, genre, portraits, and religious subjects, so that viewers will learn how Rembrandt and his contemporaries approached these themes and adapted their media to the subjects.
