No Primary Petitions Filed In Newtown
There will be no primary in September in Newtown.
The town clerkâs office advised yesterday that no petitions had been received from any potential candidates for the September primary.
Potential candidates would first have had to apply to the secretary of stateâs office, and had until 4:30 pm on August 6 to return the petitions to the town clerkâs office.
The deadline to get on the ballot for the November election was also August 6 at 4:30 pm. Nominating petitions for the November election can, however, be submitted to either the town clerkâs office or to the secretary of stateâs office, a spokesperson at the secretary of stateâs office said this week. At that time, it was not known if there were any potential candidates in Newtown for the November election.
The spokesperson said there would be no confirmation of any potential candidates until the end of August because the town has two weeks to verify signatures once the petitions are received from the state.
The Secretary of Stateâs office would then send confirmation of all candidates to the town.
