Let's Not Rush Into A Decision
Letâs Not Rush Into A Decision
To the Editor:
Two years ago, Newtown voters approved the purchase of Fairfield Hills from the State of Connecticut. At the referendum on August 12, we are being asked to approve the âusesâ for this site as defined in the Fairfield Hills Master Plan. I am asking you to vote No because:
A No vote will prevent the expenditure of nearly $10 million to build a new town hall. We should be minimizing the cost of town government not enlarging it.
A No vote will prevent the creation of a six-member âauthorityâ that will control portions of the campus before the townâs own needs have been established.
A No vote will ensure that the taxpayers of Newtown will maintain control over the campus at Fairfield Hills and the decisionmaking process.
A No vote will prevent our taxes from skyrocketing in order to finance a plan that is nothing more than a âwish listâ of possible uses.
A No vote will allow us to take title to the property and wait until economic conditions improve in order to move forward with a step-by-step approach to the utilization of Fairfield Hills.
Please join me in voting No for the Fairfield Hills master plan. As I have said before, we have a unique opportunity to create something special at Fairfield Hills that will enhance the quality of life in Newtown for generations to come. Letâs not rush into a decision we will regret in the future.
Sincerely,
Bill Sheluck
