U10 Hawks Capture Third At New England Regionals

The U10 Newtown Hawks softball team took third place in the New England Regional Tournament this past weekend in Pittsfield, Mass.  Newtown started the tournament with a tough game against New Hampshire state champion, Monadnock.

In the rain-shortened contest the Hawks never got the offense on track and went down 7-0. The following day, Newtown responded with decisive wins over Raynham, Mass and Pittsfield to earn the fourth seed in the elimination round. The players then had the opportunity to enjoy the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort and spend time with their teammates, families and extended families as Newtown had a very large and supportive group of fans that traveled to the Berkshires for the tournament.

On championship Sunday, Newtown came out ready to play and beat the Revere Rampage 2-0. With a slim lead late in the game, Newtown allowed Revere to load the bases with one out. Intensity filled the air as Newtown moved the infield in to get the second out on a force play at the plate and then got the third out on a strikeout. Moving into the semifinals, Newtown faced a rematch against the No. 1 seed and eventual tournament champion, Monadnock. In a hard-fought game, Newtown lost 4-1. 

The Hawks finished the season 29-9 with tournament results that included a championship, two second place finishes and the third place finish in Regionals.

This was a successful season for a team with only five returning travel players and the remaining players getting their first taste of competitive softball. The players that make up the team are Caitlyn Linden, Haley Ryan, Lauren Wilcox, Kelly Merrick, Katie Laaksonen, Madeline Meier, Katie Reilly, Sydney ‘Tino’ DiMartino, Sarah Spillane, Sydney Flint, Jillian Lasorsa, Zoe Beals and Jacklin Gouveia.
